Transport

Traffic in Sao Paulo can be frustrating so always give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination, especially the airport.
In Sao Paulo there is a traffic control program, or rodizio, restricting car usage one day a week, depending on the last digit of your number plate. For example on Monday number plates ending in 1 or 2 are prohibited from circulating in certain areas between certain times.
Within São Paulo, the subway is the safest and fastest transport option, but with only three lines it is fairly limited. The metro is open from 5am to midnight, including weekends, but ticket windows close at 10pm.
Transport within Brazil is overwhelmingly road based, accounting for 97% of travel, compared with 2.2% air and less than 1% rail, and the country's coach service is fairly advanced with high quality buses connecting most major cities.
The main coach companies are; Expresso Brasileiro which operates between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; Cometa, which operates between Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte; Penha between Sao Paulo and Porto Alegre; Real-Expresso between São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília.
Sao Paulo‘s urban bus system is pretty complicated, even for the locals. To find out what bus to take you can call the toll free number 0800 123 133, it‘s usually busy, but if you can reach them, it‘s very helpful. Just tell them where you are, and where you want to go, and they will tell you the bus number.
