Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha, once an active volcano, is now made up of a group of islands about 350 km off the coast of Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte. The main island, which makes up 90% of the total area, is the only one inhabited, with most of the population centered in Vila dos Remedios. With crystal clear waters the archipelago is a haven for scuba divers and snorkelers, with visibility of up to 50 meters during calm sea. The island has 16 beaches, which between the months of April and November are ideal for bathing and diving. During other months the waters are rougher and more suited to surfing. Praia do Leao, one of the island's largest and most beautiful beaches, is the main spot to see turtles while to see dolphins the best place is Golfinhos bay inside the Parque Nacional Marinho. It`s a good idea to pack essential items, such as suntan lotion and insect repellent, before going as prices on the island can be high. There are also few banking or foreign exchange facilities on the islands so it is best to bring sufficient cash. The island operates under an environmental protection program, which limits the amount of visitors, and there are some rules regarding rubbish disposal and contact with the coral, which should be observed in order to preserve the area's ecosystem. A Spanish ship lies 60 meters down at Ponta da Sapata, at the southwest tip of the island, but the area is strictly out of bounds. To get around the island you can rent beach buggies, cars and small motorbikes on Alameda do Boldro. The rainy season is from January to August and average annual temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius. The island can be reached by air or sea from Recife or Natal. The time zone on the island is one hour ahead of the mainland
