Fortaleza
 Fortaleza, a lively fishing port, is capital of the northern state of Ceara. The city got its name from a fortress, which still exists, built by the Dutch and later taken by the Portuguese. Fortaleza is lively and easy-going but holds little attraction for most tourists who prefer to travel to smaller beach towns nearby. The cleanest beach is Praia do Futuro, which lies 5km to the south along Avenida Dioguinho. Leaving the city in the direction of the west coast is the Cumbuco beach, about 23 kilometers away, which is popular because of its many sand dunes. There are several tours available from Fortaleza mostly to beach destinations such as Beach Park, Lagoinha, Jericoacoara, Canoa Quebrada, Iguape and Prainha. Among the main attractions are Canoa Quebrada, a small fishing village about four and a half hours from Forteleza, and Jericoacoara, a seven-hour trip from Forteleza. Both are very remote with breathtaking beaches, palm trees and sand dunes. Jericoacoara only recently had electricity and running water installed and animals such as pigs, goats, horses, cows and dogs roam freely around the streets giving the place an even more remote feel.
