It was probably sunday, but the center of the city is always packed of people, but the surroundings not so much, the city nowdays is pretty better than what it is on StreetView, it has changed alot on this last 2 or 3 years.
It was one of the biggest railway junctions of the country and it is going to be again with the “ferrovia norte sul”(north-south railway), it is going to pass here towards Rio Grande-RS and Porto Alegre-RS, and maybe Uruguaiana too.
It is the second biggest military center of the country, there is Air Force too with a great aerial base.
The KMW is building a panzer factory is Santa Maria, and the Technological Park(Santa maria tecnoparque) has just finished building. And there is already some enterprises there and alot of space for more.
The Federal University was the first outside a Capital, and it is considered the 14º best of the etire country by Ranking Folha Enade, on this ranking it is considered better than PUC-RJ(15º).
It is the third biggest exporter of qualified people after São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and has twice the percentage of graduated people than Brazil.
It is one of the most safe cities that you will find on this Country, you can see by the size of the walls on the houses and many houses don’t even have a wall, i was never robbed and most of people was never robbed, and i heard some few cases of people being robbed around some places that no one needs to go!!!
It is not on the sierra but it is leaning against the mountains, but you can go to Itaara in 30minutes or less.
The restaurants here are amazing, there is churrascaria boi bom, pretty cheap and very good and Pizza Nella Pietra(extremely gigantic pizza), and Casa do Pastel(extremely gigantic Pastel). There is some more expensive and better restaurants too, but i can’t say, because i have never gone there.
But depsite all of that, i don’t think that it is more than an acepptable standard of living place, i think it is ok, but no great!!!

I was going to ask you about what looked like houses without walls. I hate houses with walls. I actually looked into moving to Santa Maria a while back because I had a student in Rio who was from there, but I think it gets hotter than a mother F_cker in summer, right?

kkkkkkkkkhahahah. Well it made 40c degrees with a sensation of 47c last summer, this summer made 40 in the beginning of this month, it kept a week or two like that, and then this last two weeks are going acepptable and in the winter makes -6 degrees. But in the summer it stays like two weeks hot as hell and two acepptable like this week.
This week it is like that:
The sensation is worst than the same temperature in northeast because of the humidity, so here it is like a sauna, the variation of temperature here can be gigantic in a 3 hours window of time.
You gonna make full use of the air conditioner from December to March, from April to November is ok around here. This week are going to be hotter in SP and Rio than here for what i have seen.
If you are an english teacher you are going to find aloooot of opportunities here, we have many english schools here, and you will probably not find so much competition here. The cost of life here is pretty low, if you compare to São Paulo it is extremely low, only that a bear on a bar here it costs 3times what it is on Rio, and electronics are expensive here, but food and housing is cheaper.
You can find a good place 50m² with a condominium and 24hours security for 650r$(with condominium included) a month, it stays in a pretty great place. Only that the parkinglot is outside but as it stays in the line of view of the security guard so i never heard about no one trying to stole a car there, and i doubt that it could happen because i used to take guard on the army headquarter that stays right on its side during the middle of the night, and i never seen nothing around there(none of the other soldiers did to), and the silence there it is amazing(day and night), it is extremely quiet and close to the center of the city, with a bus stop(almost always empty) in front of it.
I have never seen a children yealling there or adults talking loud, nor in the surroundings, it is close to a football stadium where there is almost never a game there, and even when there is a game the silence is kept. In my opnion is probably one of the best place for its price.
But you could check out about Caxias do Sul too, not as much safe, but the temperature is very better, and it is a bigger an richer city, extremely industrialized, half a million population, and close to many wonderfull other cities.

Yea my Ex-girlfriend almost got transferred to Caixias do Sul and I was going to go with her. When we broke up that is when I started thinking about other places in the South including Santa Maria and also Pelotas. In the end I decided to move to Curitiba and am pretty satisfied so far. Maybe not the most exciting place and I would prefer to be closer to the border so I could hop into a different culture when I felt like it but, overall, Curitiba is pretty good. Perhaps if I get bored here I will explore find some place in Rio Grande do Sul to live for a while.

I also recommend Boi Bom! Small but good food. Check out the Vera Cruz restaurant towards the center of town too!
