Help, please – I have a guest visiting my house in Sao Paulo who wants very much to watch the presidential debate this Wednesday (Oct 3). My internet service is too slow to reliably catch streaming, and we don’t have cable TV. Anyone know of a bar in Sao Paulo that would be likely to carry it? (Lone Star said that they only have ESPN).

could you try to stream one of the public radio channels instead? I know my trusty WNYC will almost certainly carry it. streaming audio (either from the sites directly or through itunes radio) is always easier for me on my crummy connection.
(just think, it’ll be nostalgic. just like when everybody used to listen to baseball on their little radios.)3casas2012-10-01 06:16:44

Yes 3C, that was to be my backup. And I do miss WNYC and its daily 5-minute mumbled weather forecast direct from the “Weather Bureau”. But, listening to a debate? How in the world will I be able to guess which candidate is which?
And thanks all for not calling me out on my US-centrism for asking about “the” presidential debate. But the damage is done and now my imperialist heart stands revealed for all to see. Pig

Fellow WNYC listeners?? How awesome! have you guys checked out Podcasts of Alec Baldwin interviewing folks? it’s called Here’s The Thing…I love it.

I still can’t believe Alec Baldwin is doing it but he’s such a natural. (almost as good as Terry Gross…. almost….)
I’ve listened to debates and other things on radio before and it’s pretty easy, they tell you who’s speaking and you can follow it.
Peter, I don’t think CBN in SP is any different than CBN here… Curitiba CBN has a mumbled weather forecast from a depressed weatherman, he sounds like Eeyore about to take the whole bottle of percocet…. if you’re missing the sad weather forecast, try CBN…..

Look if any of your neighbours (or bar) have the SKY HD antenna, they will then have the CNN International who will show the debate starting at 20:00EST (Miami), 21:00 Brasilia/SP.
But Wednesday is football night so you may not see the debate in the bar, nor at your neighboursLOL
Unless they have multi-unit receivers and a secondary TV in another room, look if the antenna has 2 cables coming out of the microwave head. That means they either have multiple TV’s or at least a DVR. In the case they only have the DVR you could drag your TV and some meters of cable to connect to the DVR and watch the secondary receiver channelsConfused

You could try to find a place with good wifi, some kind of coffe shop or something along those lines and watch it there.

Just pull up former presidential debates on youtube. It will be the SOS, just insert the applicable terms for 2012. Such as, instead of Iraq, insert Iran, ad nauseam….
I wonder if Mitt will have the same hairdresser as John Kerry?!? LOL

Iran for Iraq, Lol! The meaningful promise of ‘change’ will surely continue during the debate.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everybody. Bakc a few posts when I asked how in the world a radio listener would be able to tell who was who, I was just trying to be sarcastic, 3casas – I would like to think that there are very important differences and that we can’t have the luxury of tuning out and playing the cynical sophisticate when so much is at stake.
Anyways, we persuaded a nearby hotel that seems to have many American tourists to agree to tune in to CNN in their lobby bar. Hope the football fans don’t commit mayhem.

    Amigo,
I am doing some home improvements this week as these Municiple Elections are peeing me off, I’d rather not go out too much, everyone has afew extra quid in their pockets and they’re all on a high..until they realise they havent won the lottery.. Clown
Is it like this everywhere? ..its doing my head in here, its the attitude of the people and Johnny Silva, the toilet cleaner, running for Prefeito thinking he owns the place. Beam me up.
Is it like this in the US?

Getting back on topic – yes, we did get to watch the whole debate on a large-screen TV in the otherwise deserted lobby of the Boulevard Hotel on Sao Luiz.
    Obama was lame.Confused
And 3casas – yep, Port Authority rocks at 8:30 AM – excellent place for a meet-up. I’ll reserve a bench. See you next Monday?

it’s a date Peter, i’ll be there with a sweet potato bun from the Chinese bakery around the corner….
    ^goes into corner to sob^
i didn’t watch it, but i have heard horrible things.
i think at this point i’d rather vote for Tiririca than either of my US options.

I didn’t watch the debate. Anything new? Interesting? I doubt it, but worth asking.
