Does anyone know the best and cheapest school to take portuguese language courses in Rio?
This is something I want to take for the visa, so it cant be too expensive, but visa worthy indeed..And it must be a place where I can attend two years.

So you should check at the Federal University (UFRJ), if they have any course for foreigners. Usually UF course qualify for a student visa.

Are you only interested in studying at a language school? This is likely to be more expensive than if you study at a federal university. However, there is generally a correlation between quality and price, what are you more interested in: getting a visa or learning Portuguese? You have to have a visa to study at a university, but not for a private language school if the course is less than 90 days I think.

You might want to look at this thread elsewhere, the last post of which is about getting a visa to study at UFF in Niteroi: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/message.jspa?messageID=14660724#14660724

If it’s mainly for the visa and price is the most important factor then I think Mineiro_Alemão‘s suggestion is the best you are going to get. UFRJ is very cheap. However, I think they are sometimes reluctant to give people the letter, which you need to get the visa. A bit catch 22 but I guess they’ve had a lot of people enrolling just for the visa and not showing up for classes. If you are going to live in zona sul and take the bus out there, you should also make sure you sit in the aisle seat:

I think you can usually only enrol for one semester at a time. For this you can get a six month visa. If at the end of six months you want to enrol for another semester you can ask the PF in Brazil to extend the visa (without returning to your country of origin). It’s not guaranteed though.
