I had been really looking forward to taking my daughter for her first swim in the ocean, however with all of the news about the dirty water there I think we’ll stick to the pool. yikes!

The sea there sounds like a strange and exotic aquarium, with toilet-fish a plenty!

Take her to Praia Vermelha, the water quality is usually good.

Suddenly our hotel spot in Copa with an ocean view doesn’t sound so appealing…hopefully the stench won’t reach our room.

Praia Vermelha is an option, But we will have a fairly packed schedule. How bad is it down there really? Is it media hype or are there floating turds everywhere or something more in the middle?

i think it is just more attention to a problem that has always existed. the sewage has ALWAYS been pumped out there, but now with the olympic eye on the city, everyone is shocked.

(says the person who has never been to rio, and has no intention of going. Like I tell my PITA aunt who lives there and always gets on my case about it, if I wanted to get assaulted or catch hepatitis, I can do that right here in Curitiba!)

Went to a beach party in Niterì≥i once. The ocean was the color of split pea soup! I was amazed (appalled) at how many people were actually swimming in that swill. I would maybe enjoy the beach at Ipanema, but swim in the hotel pool. Take nothing of value with you to the beach HP!

We may just stroll down to the beach and have a glance. Bus trip is out of the question, we have a wedding Sat night and fly out Sunday afternoon.

The hotel pool sounds like the best bet.

without swimming at the local Rio beaches, may you still enjoy and take away some memories of the mystic…and there is a lot more mystic there now than at any time. something’s always happening.

We’ve been before, honestly the thing I had most been looking forward to was letting my daughter play in the ocean a bit. The mystic will be lost on her lol

it’d be so wrong to be right here and not experience the beach. just go, rent chairs and drink in the carioca thing. lots of people spend the day at the beach and never (intend to) go in the water. besides, there are sprinklers at various spots. you can do a pool anywhere in the world. rio’s beach vibe is all its own.
oh. don’t take ANYTHING with you. just a few reais, sunscreen, towel. everything else can be had on the beach.
    just do it.
