With a view to making our FAQ better, can anyone think of topics that are repeatedly asked on the forum?
One that immediately springs to mind is when and how to apply for the tourist visa extension.
    Any other thoughts?
    Thanks

    Getting married in Brazil

    Permanency visa process

shipping personal effects to and from Brazil

Some members take a quite a bit of time explaing the same things to newcomers about behaviour and communication, maybe a faq with this info, probably wouldn’t change much but at least they wouldn’t waste so much time, could just refer them to the faq.

I‘ve been looking there for a simple question “how can I add my picture to my profile?” I‘m sure it is very very simples but….

Cristina, the answer is indeed simple. Your picture needs to reside on a website. If you have something like MySpace, size your picture accordingly (64 x 64 pixels) then upload it to your web-page. Right click on the picture, select properties, copy the address (URL) and then paste it into your profile.

For example, the avatar you are using has the address; http://www.gringoes.com/forum/avatars/scene_sunovermountains .jpg

I’m pretty new here myself, but isn’ the issue of customs limits in Brazil fairly popular (transfer of money, effects, etc)?

[/QUOTE] Cristina, take a look at the iconspost on the feedback section.

To Steel Rat, how about something on “driving licences?”

Absolutely not, rather I was just showing that someone as unaccustomed to technology as myself could deal with it. Cut and paste is a big deal for me.

Hello my name is Nick (I’m originally from Edinburgh, Scotland) …and I have moved to and bought an apartment in Sao Paulo.
A big thankyou to everyone posting here….I have found Gringoes.com an absolutely essential source of information.
One thing I have been thinking about is that every ‘gringo’ coming to Brasil has the same types of “beauracratic challenges” to a lesser or greater extent!!!….. for a variety of red-tape challenges
some for the visa (tourist, work, permanent… applying, extending, paying the overstay fine)….
some for the CPF (how to get it, the papers required, what happens when it doesn’t arrive, how to renew it, how to revalidate it)…….
some for buying property (the papers required, the transfer process, completing, ….)
some for importing personal effects (what you can bring, in what time period, what papers are required for customs clearance…..)
some for the driving licence (which ones are valid, how to convert….)……
some for opening a bank account (what you need, which ones work online…)
However often the “problems” don’t appear until you are in the office, about to apply, hand over the papers or trying to complete the task in hand…. and then its back to the internet… back to gringoes ecc to search for the next small step….. in a rather log journey.
The information here is extremely helpful…. just sometimes users are here searching “reactively” as often you don’t know the next hurdle until you get to it!!!…. since there is a large number of participants here with a very defined common interest wouldn’t it be nice to have an information source that linked all the various aspects and let you know things proactively.
My suggestion is what about starting a wikigringoes or gringowiki?.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki
It would be a community produced manual of “how to….. in Brasil”…. then it becomes the “tree” of shared knowledge which grows as the individuals realise they can contribute to one “branch” or even just a “twig” of information… in essence a it would have the same kind of information that is already here only it would be continually evolving, and growing in structure with blue “links” within each of the areas jumping to related areas on interest.
For example: Several months ago I overstayed my tourist visa, travelled across Sao Paulo to Policia Federal to pay my fine (visit 1)… and was told to come back in 2 days time (visit 2)…. as I would only have one week to leave Brasil…. and my ticket was booked for 9 days later….back again, paid the fine and left. Next time I enter Brazil on permanent visa…. another trip across Sao Paulo to Policia Federal this time to register for RNE (visit 3)….. however not knowing the documents required meant I did not have them ready….. two days later back again (visit 4). Then armed with my RNE protocol… off to the bank to finally open a bank account (after a year of struggling with credit cards)….. not so fast the manager said a protocol is not enough you need a “certadao”…… yet another another trip across Sao Paulo to Policia Federal (visit 5)…… to be told it would only be ready in ten days and then I would have to come back (visit 6). If I had been informed I could have reduced these six visits to three!!!
My experience is that I have never queued so much, for so many bits of paper (translated, authenticated or verified) for so many complicated processes in my life…… perhaps a wikigringoes will save ‘everyone’ some time for some things.
    Anyone think this is feasible?
sorry maybe this should have been a new topic??
    Nick

As I see it the problem with this FAQ concept, or any similar, is that there is no set way things get done. You can look up the rules and regulations and post them, and they are a helpful starting point, but for everyone of these red-tape challenges; bank account, drivers license, real estate purchase, visa, etc. there are as many ways they get done as people doing them. I think the various stories are very amusing and help to awaken ones creative problem solving skills. More like clues than answers.
    More Real Life Tales!!!

Maybe you could include links to decent existing threads dealing with the various subjects in the FAQ section. This way people would be able to read the experiances of others without members having to post the same story a thousand times.

Adding links to importan documents needed for visas and fees might be useful in the FAQ section.

    Such as these:

    https://www2.dpf.gov.br/gru/gru?nac=1

    http://www.mj.gov.br/sistemas/EstrangeiroWEB/index.asp

GRU -Funapol (emissão da guia para pessoas e entidades estrangeiras)

    STN# 140090

Updates on visa fee changes and overstay changes might be useful also.
