Question for those living in RJ. What’s the best way getting to Galeao Airport? Don’t want to spend a fortune on taxi if I don’t have to. I would need to go from Gloria district to GIG airport, regular bus is not on option because I’m going to struggle with my baggage, is there an shuttle going to Airport? ptic2012-05-27 23:55:48

There is a bus from the Rodoviaria (Tiete) but you’d have to get a cab or bus there….

What about the tube, is there connection to bus station? Tiete? Isn’t that in SP, I thought in RJ is called Terminal Novo?

Sorry – I meant Novo. Thinking about it a bit more you could get a cab to Santos Dumont from Gloria which would be about $R10, then wait for the 1/2 hourly Reai bus to GIG (another $R10). Less hassle.

Take a cab you bum!
Are you going risk your luggage on public transit or waste 30 reais on a cab and then 30 on the bus when your overall taxi ride is going to cost you 100?

I have done the bus 3 times from zona sul to GIG. It takes an eternity to get there. They stop at the other airport, central bus station and numerous other stops. Takes forever for $R20. Better to bite the bullet and take a cab IMHO.

Agree, you can negotiate R$100 – $130 taxi ride even from as far away as Campo Grande. It’s funny, when you haul your luggage through the train and then you arrive in Central Rio de Janeiro, the remaining cab still costs R$60 or more on the meter. So, it probably isn’t worth it to mess around with the luggage. Now may be you need my girl to negotiate the taxi rate, but that won’t happen

After 8pm weekdays or weekends there’s no advantage to getting a cab. I timed the bus from Ipanema to GIG last September on a Saturday evening (9pm) – 45 mins. A cab might have got me there 15 mins earlier but for an extra 70BRL or so… Where does the $R20 come from? It’s 12BRL and no more.. Bubbles2012-05-28 12:33:05
I guess not all of us have money to burn and some of us actually know what we’re talking about. For the record the Reai bus is actually an air-conditioned coachwhich is used predominantly by foreigners going to the airport and not the general public – oh – it also costs $r12 not the nonsense $R30 you mention….. Also, by reading the post it can be easily construed that the OP does not have an open budget and wishes to minimise his outlay…else he would have taken a cab and not created the post in the first place….. We took an executive bus from GIG to Catete last time we were in Rio. I think we got off at Praia Flamengo. It only cost us about R$8/person if I remember correctly. I Googled a question about how to get from GIG to Catete and someone had written an extensive, WONDERFUL answer on Yahoo questions and it was perfect. I think the bus was a Frescao?
Anyway, our flight was early and it was the perfect option for us. We ended up taking a cab from Catete to GIG and it cost us less than R$50.

Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence. There’s a bus that goes from Tijuca to Airport, airport service. Leaves tijuca at 5 am in the morning then goes every 20 min. It stops at Hotel Gloria about 500 yards from where I’m staying …

Actually it was 30 reais in SP to take the bus from GRU to our apartment. That 15 minutes can be important dependent upon your necessity to arrive sooner rather than later…

Actually I’ve been told here that taxi from Copacabana to GIG would cost about 50 RS and not a cent more? It sounds reasonable but I still I find that hard to believe? Any comments would that be the right figure?

Ipanema to vila da penha (a longer run than copa X GIG is R$60. Gloria X GIG will be about 30-40.
Im all for pinching pennies, but the airport bus can really suck. It goes thru centro rather than via perimetral and can make several long stops with people trying to juggle baggage. You also always have idiots that clog the aisle with their bags, making everything more difficult.
Either go with a cab all the way, or a cab to sdu and the regular R$3 bus between airports that goes via perimetral.nikkij121852012-05-29 21:23:53

Expresso Pegasso? Does it go to the airport terminal? If so, a good option.

You my friend, got royally ripped off.
Penha X Ipanema (border of Leblon) is about R$55 during the day and R$70ish at night.
I just went from Vilar dos Teles (Sao Joao de Meriti) to V. da Penha (about 15km, between cities, at 1am) for R$35
Tijuca X SDU should be about R$40 max. Its less than 10km.
they were doing work on the tunnels so we went over the hills. the long route
Were you in Tijuca or BARRA da Tijuca?
There shouldn’t be tunnels or hills between tijuca and SDU, but Barra da Tijucais very far away and would probably set you back R$80 ish bandeira 2 to SDU on a normal day, since its more than 30km (R$100 would make sense, if by “hills” you mean going over the Estrada de Joao, instead of the Elevado, and you hit some traffic associated with work being done).
