My husband and I would like to ship our 4x4 equiped car from the UK to Brasil in order to travel to Patagonia, Argentina and Chile, going in and out of Brasil for about 12 months. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use " Admissao temporaria" for 12 months? Do we need to pay any deposit? How does one releases the car from the Duana in Santos? do we need any special insurance?  He does not hold a Brazilian passport..can his visa be renewed for the duration of a year? I do hold a brazilian passport but I am not a resident there.
I would be very grateful for a "direction" about these matters.

As a tourist, your husband can remain in brazil for six months. He is entitled to a permanents visa though.

As far as I know, you can do that with a car, just can't tell you how.

thank you so much for your reply!!
My husband cannot have permanent visa as we did not registered our weding in Brasil ( long story) About the car, the only information I have is that it can remain for 3 month on temporary admission, and perhaps it can be renewd for another 6 months..
Do you know if I can pay some kind of "guarantee deposit" to be refunded once the car leaves the country for good?

You don't need to have your marriage registered in Brazil. Just talk to the local consulate about obtaining a permanent visa. If you where married for over 5 years, it will take only a couple of weeks.

Otherwise, your husband will not be allowed to remain in Brazil for more than 180 days in a period of 365.

Based on the links above, it seems that if he gets the permanent visa they might not be eligible for the temporary admission of the car anymore. You need to be a tourist.

Dear Sven: thank you for your reply, I will need to talk to a laywer in Brasil, as this marriage recognition business is more complicated...pure burocracy+time+ money.
But you've helped a lot! I really need to have those documents sorted out asap!
Thanks again!!

Registering your marriage is not that complicated, but as you don't live in Brazil, it should be done in Brazilia. Just get a judicial translation of the marriage cert, Have the consulate stamp it, and it can be registered at the Cartório do 1a Circunscrição do Registro Civil. Since you have family in São Paulo, with a "comprovante de residencia" you can also register it in São Paulo (same cartorio).

But for the permanent visa, the marriage does not need to be registered in Brazil, as a native you are "required" to do so within 6 months from "returning to brazil".

Check this link for the permanent visa:

Should not take longer than a few weeks if you've been married for more than 5 years. Less than five years, it can take a couple of months.

Dear Sven,,,very clear! I tell you what  I was getting stuck on,,,the fact that my divorce is not recognised unless I have i "Homolugado" in Brasilia!! in order for me to change to my married ( 10 years) name. But you've just clarifeid to me, that one thing has nothing to do with the other, and that my actual husband could have the permanent visa once the marriage is registered..2 different procedures.
What we might do it to ask for the permanent visa outside Brasil, after trave toling for a while..is the car that we will need to fifure it out how to keep it in Brasil for more than 6 months...a true chalenge of will, patience and skills to understand the burocratic system.

Indeed, you can't Register your current marriage in brazil, unless you do the homologado. But for the purpose of the visa, your current marriage is valid. Just apply for the visa in the UK.

I was in that same situation at the time, and no, they (the consulate) did not accept the application for the visa ...

In that case, you should get a lawyer asap to do the homologation of the divorce, which takes around 6 months (i've heard) so you can apply for the permanent visa while you're here.

Dont think your UK 4x4 suv can run on the Brazilian gas, as they put 40 or is it 60% sugarcane alcohol in it!

And where did you get this wrong information from?

I think you are confusing some different facts dealing with the FlexFuel cars.
