Curious. Perhaps your expectations of "significant" were overly high. How much did you plan to "gain?" Let's see, I plan to gain R$100. Huh. The only things I plan to gain are some fluency in Portuguese, better health from regularly snorkeling and surfing, some Brazilian friends (likely among the kayak/surfboard fishing crowd in Salvador) and a more relaxed attitude. Oh, and a tan.
If I'm lucky, I'll save a bit of money from my teacher salary, which shouldn't be too tough to do. They're paying for my apartment, so my expenses should be fairly low if I don't buy a car (which I see no need to do). Thanks for the advice, though. |

Yeah, I'm pretty much beach crazy too. I lived for 4 years right on The Strand in Hermosa Beach CA, and in the first month or so of living there, went out for a nighttime swim in the ocean. One of my roommates, a SoCal local, thought I was absolutely out of my mind. Still, after 4 years I wasn't so much tired of the beach, as I was tired of having lots of my roommates friends hanging out at the house, and stealing my food and beer.
I think it would take me quite a few years to get tired of the beach in Brazil, but who knows. After all, it isn't the beach that I'm interested in, as much as being in the ocean, or out fishing on the ocean. So Amsterdam, what do you do now for fun, if not the beach? Do you travel around inland much, go to rain forest preserves? I'm genuinely curious. |

I stopped planning a long time ago because there is always something unexpected and unaccounted for that blows the plan out of the water.... Planning reminds me of sales goals that most large corporations use. They talk about the "goal" at the beginning of the year. Halfway though the year, economic conditions change and the goal is impossible to achieve. My personal "goal" is to have a percentage increase in whatever it is. I was naive enough to trust the father of my ex with money transfers - I'd known the family for 10 years - he was unable to explain an unaccounted for R$26K - it was the banks fault, he was very busy to go to the bank (he didn't work), etc. I'd also lent his wife money prior - it took me a while but I also learnt the hard way not to trust Brazilians.
Ironically they go to church three times a week - most likely they pray to meet naive gringoes!
