zilch - every time a gringo comes here, they only last for about 3-4 months and then pack and up and move. The real LONG timers here are me and some retired Europeans, but I never see them.

I'd like to see some. I love walking up to them, speaking in English, and watching their eyes get really big (the Americans, at least). Maybe next time I pop over to the big city I'll see some.

the is one guy from New York (I'm from Boston) in our little city and when we went to Governador Valadares for business we were walking down the street I was telling my Brazilian husband in english that there is an ice cream vendor here.  I was asking for a mixed cone in Portuguese when she answered me in english!  OMG did my ears deceive me?  She was a 17 y.o girl from CT born and raised there to Brazilian parents and just moved back 3 months prior.

Warm Regards,
Teri

There's quite a few where I live in Sao Paulo - mostly Brazilians, and other South Americans but some Americans too. If they don't understand my Queen's English, I repeat myself slowly and loudly.

That is exactly the attitude that i find here. The gringoes dont want to know any other gringoes, they want to be the only gringoes in town. Confused

Yep I'll second that, some gringos I've met over the years definitely like being the only ones.. the only gringo in the villageLOL

I find it strange some times because its almost like they want to do things the hard way, instead of sharing information and learning from others who have been and done it, they want to go through the pain of discovering the pitfalls them self's.
Oh well each to their own I guess...

I tried to make afew friends gringo friends when i first came here, there arent many in the region i live, but most were passing through and just chasing skirt and didnt want anyone cramping their style i think..LOL

But seriously i have found this alot the gringoes that i have met want to be the original gringo its like magnetic poles pushing each other apart.
i have never been like that other than when i first arrived i tried to spend my time practising portuguese and meeting more Brazilian people also, but i never turned my back on any gringoes.

Its not only me then that thinks its crazy for us gringoes not to want to hang out together and talk about our experieneces here.

Phooo!! thank god for that..lol

In BH there are quite a few gringoes, and I sought them out quite a bit when I moved there. But over time I made friends with people I had things in common with rather than people of same nationality or living situation.

Now, I think it is silly to seek out people based on where they are from rather than your likes/dislikes.

I dont know if that one was fired at me but you are right of course, i have absolutely zero gringo friends here, basically cus there arent any gringoes around where i live and they dont want someone like me cramping their style as they pass through either. I heard that one of the locals ate one a couple of years ago, but i dont know if thats true, it could be an urban myth.

But i do base the people i want to hang around with on my likes and dislikes, i dont like gangsters for example.. LOL

we have lots around here and i tend to hang out with a few of them, but don't necessarily approach anyone i hear speaking english (or exhibiting any other signs of gringo-ness).  in fact quite the opposite.

I'm a Canadian living in Salvador. In more than 10 years here I have met only three other Canadians, all of whom turned out to be among the strangest people I have ever known. I now avoid Canadians like the plague--except in Canada, where that is difficult to do.

You can empathize, no doubt, because this forum seems to have attracted one Canadian of a similar calibre (or for most of you, caliber). You know who you are. Smile

I, of course, am one of the good ones. Big%20smile

Whole neighborhoods in Somerville and Everett (and other towns nearby Boston) are/were from Valadares, living side by side the same neighbors as in Brazil, but most have recently moved back, so I'm sure there are lots of recently returned folks now who speak at least a little English.

Of course, if you're from Boston, you'll know Daniel Nocera's Ze Brasil e Tiao Mineiro cartoons:
"Quantos palavras em ingles voce sabe?
Umas 10...
Entao voce aprendeu 1 por ano..."
or
"Eu vou te ensinhar tudo o que sei de ingles.
E vai demorar quanto tempo?
5 minutos...."

NOPE! Just one dude in Snow Valley (who I haven't met, yet) and then the Floripa Clan a few hours down the mtn.

Best thing is nobody even knows we're from the EUA unless they strike up a conversation and then our accents eventually betray us.

On second thought, we would be the only ones if you didn't count the "white shirts" walking around w their napsacks and little black name tags.

Great fun to lean out the window and yell "Hey Elder!! How bout them Bears/Pats/Bucs/etc" and watch their jaws drop open as you drive off.
Once they came door to door (two women) and the one woman had a weird accent, i was working in the garden in front, and i said in English- "where the heck are you from?" She almost cried. She was from Pittsburgh, had come "on mission" expecting tropical goodness and was freezing her &%&s off in Curitiba. Poor kiddo.

Frank, it's not like you're missing out on anything! Conversing in English or Portuguese, it's all the same for me now. Plus, making friends with most gringos is a waste of time since the overwhelming majority will have left Brazil is 2-3 years time.
