My family wants to ship me (I want my family to ship me) some random stuff.

Among this randomness are things such as a can of boiled peanuts and couple of dietary supplements I take to help regrow the meniscus in my left knee.

I'm pretty sure that food is generally not allowed to enter the country via USPS, right? The same applies to something like the supplements I want?

Also...how does the process work? I know that I shipped a small bottle of Everclear to a friend for her birthday (as a joke) and she received it ok. Is it possible that if I don't label the package truthfully or overly-vague then it will come across ok? I'd be pissed if some f**k was eating my cajun boiled peanuts. =_=

Thanks, in advance, for the info.

Never list the value of the contents over $50.  That can kick in duties by alfandaga.  We had some school supplies sent down back in the Fall and they put what they paid for it - something over $100 on the box (what it was worth to the sender) and we ended paying like $90 in duties.  It was goofy.  Sorry I don't have better intel such as % figures and actual costs, but that was the jist of it.  Don't value your box for more than $50 is the moral of the story.

I'll refrain from passing judgement on the foul taste, and foul smell of boiled peanuts!  LOL

If you recall, the Customs form you filled out on your flight to Brasil, you're asked if you have any seeds, nuts, etc.  Peanuts would fall into that category, which is not permitted.  But so would the hot Thai chili pepper seeds I forgot I had on my person, last time I came through GRU....  Wink

It's been stated here before that packages sent via regular mail, which have a declared value of $50 or less, are only subject to random inspection.  Packages with a declared value over that, are always inspected, as are (so people have posted), parcels sent via couriers like DHL and Fedex.  You just might luck out, and get those items.

But if you wait a few more months, around June I think, when the pinhão (large pine cone seeds) starts appearing in the markets, you can find peanuts too in almost every form.

As I'm sure you've discovered, dietary supplements are insanely overpriced here, and what you need for your knee, probably not available, or at least not in Floripa.  Technically, supplements are not permitted to send either, per ANVISA regulations.  Yet again, a small parcel, with a declared value under $50, just might reach you....

Boa sorte!!!

EDIT: I recall people posting that sometimes they have better luck by having the food product, or supplement removed from the original container, and simply placed in zip lock bags.  Yet I'd think if such a package was opened, the officials would think the intercepted a drug shipment.   Confused

Get this:  I had my background checks fedexed down here from the US.  Postage was paid in full in the US, right?  No value was declared.  My guy in the US stated, "No Cash Value," on his forms that he filled out.  When the FEDEX dude showed up today, he had a few print outs stating that the value was $226 and that I owed R$399.49 - and he wanted cash on my door step.  Is this is a common rip off scam or could this be legit?

@Cat - yeah, that sounds really strange. You should tell him to open the envelope and see that they are only documents and have no real value. I've had stuff fedex-ed here lotsa times and only had problems with "products". Dcouments or even debit cards - never. BUT everything is always opened and checked.

@FloRawb - boiled peanuts. That's wierd. Are you from South Carolina? Lucky you - you can get boiled peanuts in Salvador, Bahia, according to Wikipédia:

Supplements - I know a Brazilian who told me he buys a ton of supplements off of eBay to sell here in Brazil. Legal? I have no clue, but I doubt it. The point is that he never has any problems with getting the goods or being taxado.

I second this. My mom declared my Kindle and I paid over R$100 to pick up that package. That was just once. I've received probably a dozen other packages and never paid a cent. My family/friends know not to write more than $50. My sisters don't even put an amount down. So far no problem.

Should I label a shipment of Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce as "condiment"?
