Hi,
I'm looking for people living in Belo Horizonte. There don't seem to be many "gringoes" here, I've met one other woman. Also, I'm looking for some volunteer work here in Belo. Any suggestions?

The user zecapagodinho is there, working mostly I think (hopefully he doesn't mind me saying, but he's mentioned it on the forum before). Zeca's a gringo with the most-o, so may have already hooked up with some gringos there.

Yeah Nancy, Russ is right. I've seen a few around (mainly tourists) and of course my fellow work colleagues (about 40-50 of them).
Regarding volunteer work in BH, I'm sure there's some around. I'll ask some of the Brazilians here at work.
This weekend I might be heading back to SP to visit my family, not 100% sure yet so drop me your contact details via PM maybe we could hook up.
ZecaP.
Russ mate, your too kind. Ever thought of going into politics? Brasil could do with an honest bloke like yourself.

Denise,
I'm not really sure. I am a teacher (primary school and music) in Canada so maybe somewhere that could use those skills. I'm here accompanying my spouse who is working in Brasil so am basically looking for something to do here. I don't have a work permit/visa.

Hi, Nancy.
I am a volunteer with the Methodist Church here, and there are a multitude of opportunities for volunteering in Belo Horizonte (both with the church and also with non-church-related organizations). Your possibilities will depend largely on how much Portuguese you already know. When I first arrived, I had to be a "teacher's helper" for a few months until I knew enough Portuguese to teach English classes and substitute teach music classes for kids.
For more info, you can call (in Portuguese) the Methodist Foundation for Social & Cultural Action at 3447-0373 or to communicate in English, send an e-mail to mailto:f.metodistabh@veloxmail.com.br - f.metodistabh@veloxmail.com.br .
Good luck!

Hi, Denise.
I work for the overall Methodist Church, not a specific congregation, but the Methodist Foundation in Belo Horizonte is run by a misssionary named Gordon Greathouse.

Ok, thanks. One of the reverends in BH was an assistant at my church in SP, and worked at favela do Heliópolis too.
I found this article about volunteering interesting, not sure if info is up to date.

Hi all,
Newbie here. I will be moving to BH in December. I am currently visiting for a
month to look for places to rent. Anyone have any advice of finding rental
property? I would like to find a house but there are not many on the market.
Any gringo meets in the future for BH?

Hi, Landon.
Sorry for the delay. For the rentals, but you could try looking in the online classifieds of the local newspapers if you or someone around you reads Portuguese (look under imóveis aluguel)

We are also going to try to start a monthly gathering for English-speaking ex-pats in Belo Horizonte--First Fridays. The first Friday of every month we'll meet at the Café 3 Corações (Avenida Cristóvão Colombo, 152 in Savassi) at 19:00, starting on Friday, 1 December 2006.
Good luck and welcome!

This might be a little too late... but are you looking *just* for volunteer work or for an actual job too? It couldn't hurt to look into EABH (Escola Americana de Belo Horizonte). I'm not sure how often they need new teachers, though... EABH is a nice little school... tiny, absolutely tiny, but nice :)

Welcome, Landon.
Yes, the next meeting is Friday, 5 January. I'm going to try to bring a balloon to tie to the table make it easier to find each other.
To answer Denise's previous question, there was a sign at Café 3 Coraçoes that they were under renovation, but somebody else said the property had been sold to another business. I don't know for sure because I rarely go to that neighborhood.

I try to get there with the balloon by 19:00 but sometimes may be a few (maximum 15) minutes late. If there's a good turnout, we should be there until at least 21:00.

I am a 36 year old entrepreneur from Memphis, Tennessee. I met a girl from belo horizonte in Rome in early 2001 and had purchased a plane ticket and a ring in august of that year to fly there and propose to her on september 23rd, 2001. Needless to say, I never went due to the unfortunate incident on 9/11. My ignorance caused me to break up with her and continue on with my life in the U.S. Then I had a girlfriend that destroyed all the evidence that my belo girl existed. For three and a half years now, I have been looking for her online and was about to give up when she won an award for engineering a product in orthodontic surgery....She is a dentist and oral surgeon. I found her office number in the article online and called and we rekindled immediately. So, in march I went to belo horizonte' for a month, fell in love with her again and then fell in love with brazil. So, I am getting married in october 2007 and will be moving to belo horizonte as soon as i sell my house. Fortunately for me, I will have plenty of money to invest in a business and will have the capability of living in savasse by purchasing an apartment or house. I am also feeling a little bit insecure moving to a foreign country such as brazil, but cannot live without my girl any longer. I am very interested in meeting english speaking people to learn more about the customs, laws and traditions. My fiancee speaks english pretty well and I am diligently trying to learn the portuguese language which seems so much more complex than english. (maybe because I know it )...Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself....I have a job lined up already working for an international company my father is on the board of directors for, so for that i am very fortunate. I also have decided to end my amateur status and will be going pro in mixed martial arts just as soon as i move to belo horizonte. I will be training at the same facility that Vitor Belfort trains at, if any of you know who he is. I cross train in brazillian jiu jitsu, muay thai kickboxing and aikido.   ;   ; I look forward to meeting all of you and am starting to get excited now that I know that I wont be the only EXPAT living in belo horizonte'.

Sounds like a good novela script to me!
Dude, sounds like you got it made on all fronts: girl, job, etc... Congratualtions!
Sounds like you already made the first step. There's nothing to it. No reason to feel awkward. About Portuguese. Get the FSI courses. They're boring as hell, but they go from basic to advanced. You'll feel in the blanks and the slang after you live in Brazil for a while.
Good luck in BH.

Yes, I know who Vitor Belfort is... apart from his jiu jitsu he is also known by being married to "Feiticeira"...
My husband is a judoca (nidan) an Aikidoca (shodan - his primary martial art now).
He already trained in 2 Aikido dojos in Sao Paulo but so far does not compare to the levels he is used to in England (hard training)... here in HKG he is teaching twice a week because Aikido training is also very weak.
Good luck and all the best!

My boyfriend loves mma too, and be practices brazilian jiu jitsu. He's a blue belt, pretty close to going purple now. When we were in NYC in feb he took me to the Renzo Gracie school and was all excited about it. So cute. lol. I don't get it at all though.

Good to know some fans of mma!!! Maybe i can get some of my english speaking friends to some of my fights.....From what i understand, the majority of fights in brazil are in rio and sao paulo. I will need as much support as possible for i most likely will have a hostile crowd for i am definitely a gringo. .... Mary Anne, I can understand the excitement...I am trying to sell my house as fast as possible so i can go to thailand to train for 1 to 2 months before my wedding in october. So, I understand that kind of excitement completely. Its a rush to know you will be a much better fighter for going to a brutal school....the place i will be going is http://www.tigermuaythai.com - www.tigermuaythai.com its very cool and very brutal for the advanced training, but i will be invincible if i can get there!!!

Can you catch bullets? Just kidding w/ya dude. I know what you mean. I couldn't resist. If you got a fight going, put it up here.
I used to do MA for years and years and years. I didn't really start getting bloody until Kajukenbo, which I did for several more years. But now I don't care about getting pounded to a pulp or pounding other people. So that's why I have a lot of respect for Aikido. If I could find a cheap school where I live, I'd be there in a second! I'm sorry you were unable to connect with us, but we were there. We had a green and a yellow balloon tied to the back of one chair at our table of four outside and we didn't leave until about 22:00.
I'm not sure what you mean by people matching the profile. We advertise the monthly gathering in several ways, so it's also attended by people who don't participate in this forum. Please don't give up, and don't be afraid to ask people if they are with the group. Sorry for your frustration.

I am sorry, but I am a rookie. I think I know what you mean by "stealth" but could you please elaborate a bit. I want to know exactly what that means. Mineiros are very important to me. I am getting that cariocas would fall under this generalization too.
Can explain about the bahia connection too, but don't have to...

I think you've never had 'experiences' with baianos! I'd say that a baiano is a mineiro dormindo!

Well, actually, I won't buy the balloon, unless we can move the encounter to another location.
I will be with child that Friday and Cafe da Travessa doesn't provide much in the way of child stuff to do.
Maybe Krug Bier?

So it looks like we are meeting at Krug Bier.
http://www.krug.com.br/
There is a map on their web site "Krug Bier" - Mapa de Localização.
It is about two blocks from BH Shopping.
Landon is buying the balloon. He is making no promising on whether it
will be helium filled. Ask at the door where we are. I will tell the
receptionist.

Hi,
I should arrive around 19:00 tonight at Krug Bier. I will check the
forum and my email around 17:00 if anyone has any last minute questions.
I'm not sure if Landon has bought a balloon. Either way I will tell the doorman at Krug that we are meeting there.
See you soon,

Hi, I am so happy to have stumbled upon this site.
I've lived in BH for fourteen years. During this time a handful of gringo friends have come and gone. Currently, they have all gone. I used to teach English and do academic translations for university profs who needed to publish in English journals. I loved translating, but I worked too slowly to make a living at it. So, I entered the business world and boy oh boy was that a mistake. Unlike a good mineira, I am as transparent as Absolut vodka! People saw my good heart and the way I tried to treat Brazilians of all social classes with dignity. I ended up trusting the wrong people and being robbed and betrayed beyond belief. I now realize that, previously, by teaching only advanced students and by working with academics, my social network was largely English-speaking and nicely sophisticated -- so, I felt no need to meet other gringos here. But now my world is all Portuguese-speaking. I love Portuguese, but I moved to Brazil and learned this lovely language at 39 (I'm 53 now)-- rather old to learn one's first second language. I'm very fluent, but after an all-Portuguese day I feel tired and stressed. I'll always be an expat and "bilingue de mentira", but my 17-year-old daughter is a mineira and a "bilingue de verdade."
BTW, I've gone to a few meetings of a group of English-speaking women that also meets once a month. However, they are mostly wives of men who work for multinationals. So, most of them live in luxury homes in closed condominiums and send their kids to the American School ($$$$$). As an old hippie (without a car) I couldn't relate very well. This group appears to be more heterogenous and may even contain a few kindred spirits. (If anyone wants info on the wealthy ladies group, I'll be happy to dig it up and pass it on.)]
I'd love to meet with you all. Is there a meeting scheduled for the first Friday of September? Until then, I'd welcome any contacts. Thanks. So good to be here (no, not in BH, at this site :-) -Andrea

Oi AndreainBrazil,
I have also been here a long time (thirteen years). I found this site recently too. We are meeting the first friday of each month. I am an 80's hippie.
I have heard of these other Americans living in those places with children in the American school etc. I am definitely not one of those either. I also am without a car.
You, your daughter and anyone else you know that is comfortable in speaking English are welcome to join us.
If you read your email with any frequency it is a good idea to join the make-shift emailing list we have. (b s b a i x o AT y a h o o dot c o m d o t b r) The location of the encounter has always been the same place (until I joined) but we are looking for other options. We send out email to everyone a couple of days before the encounter reminding everyone of where and when it will be.
Anyway, if you can make it we would love to have you. The more the merrier.

Me neither, but usually there is no meeting on holidays, because everyone leaves the city, especially when the holiday is on a friday!
In fact it would be a great chance for me to finally go.
Let´s see what people say, who´s comeing !

hi all!
i'm desperate to move to BH (for many reasons I won't bore you with, but mostly because i'm just in love with the place) next year. currently looking for jobs - ideally english teaching, i'm a graduate (in music) from england and have always wanted to teach english abroad, but would consider any type of job really - and was just wondering if anyone knew of, or could suggest, any new avenues for me to try. i've written to all the companies i can think of/type into google, without a whole lot of success so far.
i'm learning portuguese fast in the hope that this will help me out! i think i'm at a pretty reasonable stage now. here's hoping i can be meeting up with you guys in months to come out there (reading this forum makes me SO JEALOUS!!!)
cheers,
zeb

Hi,
What do you play/sing? I will be in Cambridge for a week. I'm leaving here on the 16th.
You might try dice.com for whatever type of job.
Here are two relatively big english schools here in BH.
http://www.culturainglesa.com.br/ http://www.numberone.com.br/
From what I understand they pay badly but at least it is somewhere to begin. Do you have a place to stay here?

i'm a composer and play piano, sax and sing in choirs. i got the impression there was loads of cool music stuff happening out there, would love to get involved if i ever make it over to BH myself!
are you from cambridge? i am... it's wicked, i love it but don't live there any more. if you're just visiting - let me know if you want any help or contacts in the city!! i'm also pretty near by if you want a local guide :)

Yes, of course.
They had been meeting in Savassi at La Travessa (opposite McDonalds). We have met at Krug Bier though. I think I will vote for Krug again this time as I will have my children that night.
It is the first Friday of the month. We haven't met for a couple of months. Everyone has been pretty busy.
I will post more details here when the date is closer.

Hi All,
I am new to Gringoes.com, but been in an out of BH for a number of years, and would like to meet the international community here. I am from Santa Fe, New Mexico, but have spent most of my life outside of the USA. I understand there is a monthly meeting in BH...when and where?

Hi,
We are a couple of mature South Africans and have just stumbled on this site and would like to make contact with anyone from any group that plays social bridge.
I am working here for 6 months and my wife, who is a regular bridge player (at a social level!!!) would like to play during the day. We would both be available to play in the evening.
We are living in Savassi, but have no car and would like to get to know other english speaking expats, as well as Brazilians with similar interests.
