I would like some advice. A Brazilian friend with limited but rapidly progressing English is coming to visit me in the US. He lives in Brasilia and is a teacher. Are there things I can do in terms of food items, hygiene (I read a lot about this!) or anything else to make his visit more pleasant. I know that everyone is different, I just wondered if anyone can provide any general advice or guidelines.

Not sure if it will make his visit more pleasant, but this will certainly make it more pleasant for you... tell him there is no need to fold his TP, once used, and place it in the trash.  Just flush it ALL away!  LOL

That was a good oneLOL Same in China, except they don't use toilet paper at all. Once I saw the under pants in the trash bin, used as a replacement to paper, eewww. It was at the Sanghai Expo once. The foreigners were lead to western style toilets, and you were given by the "toilet manager" 5-6 sheets of TP. The Chinese had they side where they have only the hole in the floor and no paperConfused

Brazilians use a lot of salt in their food... so have the salter filled up.
The coffee needs to be strong and about 50% of sugar, have the sugar stock ready.
Brazilians don't like too spicey food, hide the peppermill, and warn him if taking to a tex-mex or Indian place.

Pay special attention to the bathroom, and don't walk around the house barefoot.

They do like salt, but salt is bad for everyone. don't make ussuptions until you meet the person.

Be patient and pleasant, take your vacation time from work and be a good host.

You can make any coffe strong, just add more. Let him make it. I'm sure he knows how. Coffe is black ! No cream ...

Maybe lots of rice, beans, and beef. You better check with him first though he might be a vegitarian.

Separate bath towels, give him his own set.

Smile a lot and be extra nice Smile !

Don't expect him to eat a lot at breakfast and dinner, our main meal is lunch. Try to have some fresh fruit available, but no need to be extravagant, some apples and bananas will do.
Warn him that the little star next to a dish in a restaurant means the food is spicy!! (Made that mistake my first day in the US...)
