Good question. What do you take home for a present? All my friends still have most of a undrunken bottle of cachaça in the cupboard and a shellacked prianha fish on the mantle. Sometimes the hippies have some interesting necklaces but the good ones usually involve endangered species. Usually I just laugh at the US customs guy when he asks me if I have anything to declare.
Not that I am not open to a good suggestion.

Hi, and thanks for the reply. Definitely there seems to be quite a competition, and one of the big issues I found out is the prevalence of knockoff goods. There's a huge amount of bootleg ipods and iphones here, and people think they can get an "ipod" for cheaper, but it isn't the real deal. What I need is someone who wants a genuine Apple ipod, but most of those people can afford it themselves or travel to the US anyway.

A couple things. The ipods I have aren't last generation, they're fourth generation, and I've only had them a couple months. Second, they're not $180 on amazon, they're $230, which is where I purchased them from although it was difficult as there is a limit. And last, there is an international warranty that is valid here in Brazil, its based on serial number and that goes for all Apple products. Every ad I posted was well below what everyone else was asking for also.

Anyway thanks for your thoughts but I think I'll just try to sell them through word of mouth and keep the ads posted online.

There is a warranty if they aren't knock offs, stolen, or otherwise limited in their warranties by some other means.  Buyers can't really confirm they have a warranty until they buy it and find out when they try and get it fixed.  You're giving yourself 100% credibility, when you have essentially none in the eyes of these buyers.  Try posting on craigslist.org as well.  Try spending a bit and getting more viewers.

Amazon currently has the latest generation for $204.  So they are down $25 already (granted they're out of stock, when they come back in stock, they might return to $229).  You've got 5 of them to sell, so best to try a few different methods.   I assume you got the ipod touch, and not the ipod nano.
There is just so much to do in Brazil, and so little time to do it all! Planning my next Brazil Vacation and the countdown has started!

Thanks Jkennedy. Your comments make sense.

What about if I just bring 1 camera (opened, carry-on), 1 macbook (opened, carry-on),  an ipad (gift wrapped in checked baggage), and have one ipod with me, and the other in my checked baggage.

Maybe I should just ditch the ipods and buy colognes and perfumes instead .....

Would this look as fishy?

Do not giftwrap the Ipad!!!! Carry on only for Ipad!!!!Wink

I think Brazilians are about where we were in the 80's with large manufactures like Nike/Reebok making quality products and other "stuff" often being very inferior, so we seemed to gyrate towards brands for quality, along with brand name.   Now those brands equate almost "cheap" in the US, while little niche marketing companies are the place to go.

This is a little off topic, but also important...

What can I take from Brazil to the USA to turn a small profit to help pay for the trip? I have thought of jewelry or gems, but I have no idea how I would go about doing that. Any other suggestions of things that would be more expensive in the US than in Brazil.

PS. When I say jewelry I mean just like one diamond ring or earings.
At present exchange rate there is nothing you can buy in Brazil and make money due to the huge taxes here, you can buy stuff in the States at 1/2 to 1/3 the price.

I saw a fellow with a painting he thought he had a good buy from an unknown artist... Buy art you love but don't expect to flip for a profit...

Oh yeah a few days ago, Customs in Salvador let me in with three bags and two carry on with two questions: "Presentes? Ipod, Ipad?  I said yes to presents, some baby clothes and toys, and told him I had my laptop, sent on my way...

What part of Brazil are you going to. I have a friend in Sao Paulo that might be interested in buying some stuff from America. He is trying to set up a shop to sell American goods. I'm trying to find a way to ship it to him. Cameras are a good thing. He also said there is a good market for perfumes, sunscreen, makeup stuff, and cleaning stuff. If you are going back to Sao Paulo let me know so when you get there you don't have to look for someone to buy your stuff. Good Luck, I wish I was there in Brazil.

PS. Voce fala Portugues? Do you speak Portuguese?

Came across these chains just now from a google search and the opportunities in Brazil are great!  I'm actually a well established Oakley seller of Authentic merchandise (I can prove it!) and would love to get my hand in this honey pot more!

Ha let me know if anyone traveling to Brazil needs some discounted Oakley's to sell there!

I returned this year with the misses. Between us we had over $10,000 US in electronics, .. Fed police stopped us just to ask how long we had been out of Brazil (for some reason he didnt notice im not Brazilian) .. He said that with one year or more living outside Brazil my girlfriend was allowed to enter with what ever she wanted, no limit - Although i think he mentioned she wasnt allowed more than 5 of the same item.

I wish we had know that before hand, as i would have loaded up her case with goods to sell. All the stuff we had on us we have no intention of selling.

I have funded part of my trips by bringing iPhones that I resell on mercadoLivre. I usually bring 2 phones...One used that I use when coming in (my SIM card is even in it) and another one in its box. If they ever ask, I will say that its a present. Never had any issues (well so far). I even carried on a small laser printer once!

One question I have is regarding shipping electronics for xmas.

So, I want to ship a Playbook as a xmas present? How does that work...any duties, or will they let it go as it is a present? I was going to use Fedex.

Let me know of your experience, recommendations!

Cheers!
