I appreciate all of your help! There's some good ideas out there and some useful advice too. When I left Brazil I was able to sell most of my used electronics for enough to buy them new and have some profit too! Not to mention my friends who I sold them to were very happy with the price.
My plan is just to vary the stuff so much that it could all be personal items, plus I will ditch the boxes. Do you think boxes are necessary to sell things? I'm assuming that not having a box is worth the discount that they get from buying from the U.S. I don't think getting a RADAR license is possible for someone who just wants to sell electronics like me. |

That's why i mentioned sending the boxes and all packaging by mail. It will cost next to nothing. When you come home just repackage everything.

Stick to one item of anything you bring....easier to explain that they're all for your own use in the unlikely event you're searched.... Edited by MackOldroyd - 16 March 2011 at 02:56 |

i had a brazilian friend abroad, he was wired transferred the money. Simply because his friend wanted a ps3 so badly haha. I have never tried this sort of method of travel, but a free flight sounds appealing. The only issue I have is if you're bringing a laptop to sell, how do you bring your actual personal one, lol.?

Interesting thread. I am heading to Brazil very soon (this week!), and thinking of doing this. I am already bringing in a Macbook for a friend. Saw this thread and now I am thinking of bringing in the following items to make some $ to make my trip pay for itself: ipad How risky is this? What are the possible consequences and how likely is it that I get into trouble? any suggestions? is it best to carry-on or can i pack it in suitcase? I would only bring in one of each, unboxed. I am a tourist from Canada. Please let me know! Edited by logmeout - 22 March 2011 at 11:40 |

You can bring in $500 as gifts, you're pushing it with touch/nano/ipad/macbook. You're only bringing one of each, sure, but touch/nano are essentially mp3 players. 2 laptops + ipad?
Console could go under your gift category. Clothes/perfume isn't hard. If you pick it up at Marshalls/Ross, you'll end up with great margins. I've heard of many people doing that, and seen how much stuff they've taken down doing that. Clothing is hard to price, hard to decide what is used and what isn't. If you claim the electronics are yours, they'll simply document everything and you'll have to prove you're taking it out with you. Cameras are probably ok, but if they start documenting things, I bet they document the cameras as well. |

There is just so much to do in Brazil, and so little time to do it all! Planning my next Brazil Vacation and the countdown has started!

Thanks Jkennedy. Your comments make sense.
What about if I just bring 1 camera (opened, carry-on), 1 macbook (opened, carry-on), an ipad (gift wrapped in checked baggage), and have one ipod with me, and the other in my checked baggage.
Maybe I should just ditch the ipods and buy colognes and perfumes instead .....
Would this look as fishy?
