Hi Guys,

I will be marrying by Brazilian wife this month after successfully applying for our licence in Goiania. After the wedding we will be travelling to Rio to submit our application and the paper work required.

We left the UK back in August (we had been living there together for just over 4 years) with the intention to travel around south america and then return to Brazil to apply and get married with her family present. This meant giving up my full-time job back in the UK as well as any monthly income we both made.

My concern is that with no monthly income and savings running out our application will suffer. Has anyone else experience this? Is there away around this as with the settlement visa she can return to the UK and seek fulltime employment anyway?

We will be staying with my parents on our return so expenses will be very low

Thanks for your help

Without regular income you will need savings.  The exact amount is not tangible as it will be an arbitrary decision based on your expected outgoing expenditure (rent, bills, living costs etc) and your real prospects of getting gainful employment in a defined period of time.  You will also need to have suitable accommodation (and proof of its suitability) arranged before your wife applies and if that is living with parents you must provide their proof of ownership or tenancy and a letter from them indicating that you have their permission to live with them in their house where there is a room set aside for your exclusive use.  You won't get a settlement visa without showing this in the application bundle.

See Maintenance and Accommodation

If you think your level of maintenance is a problem then you might consider traveling to the UK with your wife as a visitor and then, in six months when you presumably have a job and an income, she can return to Brazil and apply for settlement.
