Hi,

Does anyone know any good bars in Jardins near Rua Haddock Lobo and Oscar Fr?

The infamous All Black is on Oscar Fr http://www.allblack.com.br/

Despite my Gringo-y-ness I've yet to visit there, although it seems to get positive reviews.

Where on Oscar Fr is it?

Is it near the tommy shop or further down?

Thanks

Rupert

At the site it gives you the address, Oscar Freire 163.

It looks like Tommy Hilfiger are at 848, so according to Apontador.com.br that's about 6 or so blocks walk.

I find in Sao Paolo that 6 blocks can turn a nice area into a really dodgy one!

Is it still a good area?

Rupert, yes still a good area.  Still you can get kidnapped as in any other good area.

I liked All Black the times I went there (always for happy hour). The only problem for me is that they charge a cover charge of something like R$25 after 8:00 (? check those numbers). It's not a "consumacao" mind you, but a regular cover charge - not applicable towards anything. I'm too old to pay cover charges like that .

I hope I don't get kidnapped. I don't know if my company policy gives me kidnap insurance.  Maybe I should give AIG a call.

R$25 cover charge sounds a bit steep, so is it just for gringoes then.  What about hot girls and the footy?

Just checked out the website... apparently the cover charge ranges from $0 on Sundays & Mondays night, to R$15/R$20 (ladies/men) Thursday-Sat. (Though I don't know... seems like every time we go there, they want to charge us a cover) My wife and I usually just go there for a beer and something to eat, and go home right after. Sometimes, if we get there around 7:00, they'll tell us "the computer puts a cover charge on your bill automatically, but if you leave before 8:00, just tell your waitress to take it off your bill..."   Of course, we're thinkin' we only came here for a light meal, but now we have to make sure and eat fast, or we'll be charged an extra R$35?

On the other hand, by just that kind of logic, it makes the place not very friendly to conservative, married couples... thus, most people there are probably well-to-do singles out to drink and have a good time. Could be a great place to meet girls (I don't know about "footy"... erm... must be somethin' else I'm too old for)?

I'm surprised this is the only bar we're talkin' about here... no one  can recommend any other bar in the Jardins?

And what are you lookin' for Rupert? What age crowd are you lookin' for? Lookin' for a loud dance club, sports bar, happy hour, or quiet pub? Etc?

I agree, it does sound very much like the rich single Brazilian/gringo set. I also agree that's too much for a cover charge, unless it's something pretty damn special. I still need to go to All Blacks, and the other few classic Gringo bars. I think Finnegans is the only one I've made it to, which is worth it for the bagpipes (if the guy's still there).

I've found I much prefer places with an atmosphere or vibe, or something special and different, like the Tantra restaurant (Itaim). I quite liked Grazie a Dio (Pinheiros) as well for all its jungle vegetation, but they had to cover over the roof for sound insulation and all the plants died. All that's left is one straggly ill looking palm.
