Is this customary? An attorney wants 4% to help me send cash to Brasil to buy an apartment there. I find this outrageous that they charge percentages.
If the work is the same for any property why to charge a percentage? Why not a flat fee? this is total robbery. h. ![]() Edited by Hercules - 17 September 2009 at 16:42 |

I never had an attorney charge me that.
Why are you using an attorney to send money? Do you have a perm visa, CPF, etc???

It is not uncommon that they choose to charge 4% on the purchase of a property for foreigners (even though it should be about 2%)
If it were me I would be asking around.... |

I heard even 2% is too high. If you're based in either the US or UK MoneyCorp can transfer for much less. Who's charging 4%? Would be good to know so we can all avoid them...sounds like they're trying to scam you. |

It is legal to give you personally the name of the lawyer? He has a
page on the internet. I want to be 100% sure. But I said around 200 to
350K I would send over to Brasil and he said you can only send money if you buy property or invest in an enterprise.
should we ask Steel Rat to see if I can let others know? Is it legal in this site to warn others with attorneys, I fear lawsuit for defamation. I know that there are attorneys that are honest, but how does one know

I bought without a lawyer. Just the Creci realtor who worked both sides and no problem. No 4% for a leech bloodletting treatment either.

If you're quoted 4%, what's wrong with naming the person or firm? You're not defaming anyone - that's what you've been quoted. i've seen other posts here where you shouldn't pay more than 1.25% for a lawyer...if you're foreign they'll try and blled you dry!
Just shop around and get a quote.

Why use a lawyer? If you are Brazilian just transfer the money into your account... |

Because I am brasilian is that I fear bank thievery. I fear that Banco Central and other middle of the road banks midst transaction will hold the money alleging they need more documentation just so they can profiteer on the holding onto the money.
I detest this in Brasil, every thing is such a freaking HASSLE....is problems every where, nothing goes smooth down there....incompetence is king...and thievery unmatched. The lawyers invent information to get more money from you. ONe told me the government of Brasil would charge me 28% just for transfering cash and that he would charge me 4% ......even though I have a cpf in Brasil. I get really disillusioned and feel that Brasil is THE WILD WEST...a thug country. The government being the worst. Wait until Oil starts to vomit out of the Atlantic, then the whole county will turn into a war battle field! |
