![]() Topic: "Termo de Responsabilidade" (affidavit of support)Posted: 14 May 2009 at 21:28 |

Hello again,
I'm still debating whether or not I'll apply for my permanent visa here in the states or wait until I return to Brazil on my tourist visa. I married a Brazilian about a year ago here in the US, and she has been going through the US process of naturalization. Now we'd like to return to Brazil for some time, and I would like to get my permanent visa. My problem is that in order for me to apply while here, the consulate states that my wife must provide a "Termo de Responsabilidade" (affidavit of support) that has been "sworn by the Brazilian spouse before either the Consulate or a Notary Public in Brazil". This will be a bit difficult as she is in the US and will not be returning to Brazil until I do. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there a way to get around this one item, or will it make it impossible for me to apply now? Thanks for the help. |

Signing the affidavit in the consulate was enough for us. And the law, because that is what the sentence says. The words "in Brazil" apply only to the part after OR. In fact, it is the best and fastest way to apply for the permanent visa at the consulate, and not wait until you get to Brazil.

Its a lot quicker and easier to do it in the US. We stood at the window while the lady told my wife what to write on a plain sheet of paper. She wrote as the lady dictated, signed it, and we were done with that part...

A problem with doing this at our consulate, is that we live near Seattle and the nearest consulate is in San Fransisco, which is too far for us to travel with our budget. If I did apply here in the states, it would be through a visa service in Seattle. Does anyone know if my wife could print the form off the internet and have it signed in front of a notary public in the states?

If its a "real' visa service, they should have a copy to use as a template...

I am originally from Seattle as well and had to apply for my voluntary visa in San Francisco, this in my experience was a very irritating consulate...be prepared for some hassle! But keep in mind on the other hand that it will take a long time once in Brazil to get permanence (1-2 years) vs about 3 months from the USA.
Talk to a visa service, I used brazil fiesta http://www.brazilfiesta.net/ and they were pretty good, the only visa agency I found that would do a volunteer visa. |

I used Brazil Fiesta myself for renewing my Tourist visa years ago (I'm also from Seattle area) and they seemed pretty knowledgeable.
