Hi there, I have been here in Brazil around a year and a half. I have a CPF and am waiting for my visa application to be processed (what a wait!). I was just wondering if anybody knows whether I have to do a tax declaration or something like that, it being the end of the tax year and all of that.

To be honest I'm well confused! There seems to be little information on this subject. I don't know if i'm ok just doing nothing or if i need to make a declaration of earnings (which by the way is zero as I'm not working). Any pointers or advice would be useful.

Thanks in advance

As far as I remember, you have to file your taxes to keep your CPF valid, and I'm pretty sure you can do them online, but I'm not sure you can do them without a valid ID number.
Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might've been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise

That´s not true. Actually it´s quiet simple.

In case you have earned more than R$ 16.473,72 in 2008 in Brazil you are required to file your anual tax declaration (DECLARAÇÃO DE IMPOSTO DE RENDA) untill 30/04/2009 via internet.

Also if you are a partner (sócio) in a Brazilian company, no matter how much you earned or you have assets in Brazil with a value of R$ 80.000,- or more you are required to do the tax declaration. No matter if you earned R$ 1,- or R$ 100.000,- in 2008.

In case you are below the income tax minimum of R$ 16.473,72, you don´t have to do anything. Since 2008, the tax free declaration (DAI DECLRAÇÃO ANUAL DE ISENTO) doesn´t exist anymore.

Wow! Thanks for the comprehensive info. That means I'm ok as I am then, ie doing nothing!!!

Cheers

Drdavido, is it mere coincidence that you posted this topic on Tax Day? ;)

I have a CPF number and earning below R$ 16.473,72.
As long as I remain below this amount and am not completeing any tax returns will my CPF number remain active forever??

Yes Lee,

for the moment you don´t have to do any declaration. And as long as the RF does not come up with a new type of declaration.

BTW, the max. value for the income will be adjusted each year. The amount of R$ 16.473,73 refers to the year 2008.
Next year the value will be a different, according to the income tax regulations.

Don't forget that if you become a permanent resident (get your permanencia by virtue of marriage for example) you must file for the year that took place irrespective of lack of income or assets.

For those with permanent visas I believe you have to declare your worldwide assets  every year that are over 80K  - not just those in Brazil - even if your income is not above the taxable threshold here. Could be wrong.
