LOL

About the best description of São Paulo EVER LOL

You can also feel the vibration when busses and trucks drive close by.

I've had the luxury of "having to live" in São Paulo and Manaus for work. I hate both cities. The only thing I really loved about São Paulo whas that every friday I could fly back to Rio to relax. Manaus was just to far away and thus too expensive.

It's really hard to find people that where not born in São Paulo that will state that they "love São Paulo" and even then, most Paulistas leave the city the first oportunity they get to leave for the coast or the mountains.

When yu fly into Rio, you know you're arriving when you see the beaches, chirst or the sugar loaf. When flying into São Paulo you know you are close when you see a huge dark greyish cloud.

This is where the money is but don't neglect the south of Brazil.  There is quite a bit of money down there too.

Sven, if you saw my citation I used Wikipedia for my info, which I pointed out in the text, 10.5 Million? That Census was in 2007, How many people you think immigrated since then (from abroad and from the Northeast) and remember those numbers are "legal" numbers, people who have registered their RG & RNE in Sampa.

Bahaina, you live in the United States, you don't walk the street as I do every day, sure there are kidnappings and muggings but that happens in any city of this size!

You guys can sl*g Sampa off as much as you like, but I still like it here. Ya fly to Rio, its paradise, thats why its the second most dangerous city in the world next to Johannesburg (South Africa), go for a walk on the beach as a gringo end up in Intensive Care( That happened last week), have so much crime in the favela's that they create a special police force just to combat the violent crime in them!

Paradise! Oh how I wish I could live there

Come on, do you really want to make believe that more than 10 million moved to São Paulo in 1.5 years (I live in 2009, what year do you live in?)

These numbers are not legal numbers based on RG etc. they are estimates. So in your opinion, is Wikipedia more reliable than IBGE ???

The number you point to are for what IBGE calls a mesoregiao, and in this case "area metropolitana de sao paulo"
Tabela 793 - População residente
Variável = População residente (Pessoas)
Ano = 2007
Brasil e Mesorregião Geográfica
Brasil183.987.291
São José do Rio Preto - SP1.505.728
Ribeirão Preto - SP2.246.443
Araçatuba - SP669.167
Bauru - SP1.416.746
Araraquara - SP770.447
Piracicaba - SP1.322.072
Campinas - SP3.592.931
Presidente Prudente - SP828.824
Marília - SP436.707
Assis - SP539.240
Itapetininga - SP793.469
Macro Metropolitana Paulista - SP2.452.227
Vale do Paraíba Paulista - SP2.155.485
Litoral Sul Paulista - SP442.982
Metropolitana de São Paulo - SP20.655.102

Now that includes ABC Paulista, Guarulhos and several other cities. (this is the list Wikipedia points to in reference 12)

Now if you apply this to the "city of são paulo"

Tabela 793 - População residente
Variável = População residente (Pessoas)
Ano = 2007
Brasil e Município
Brasil183.987.291
São Paulo - SP10.886.518

São Paulo actually have the same kind of police force, it's just not called BOPE.

Actually, the numbers Wikipedia mentions for the city population is:

Área 1.522,986 km²
População 10.990.249 hab. (SP: 1º) - est. IBGE/2008 [2]
Densidade 7.216,3 hab./km²

and NOT 20 million (it mentions 20 million for :

Sua região metropolitana possui 19.223.897 habitantes,
