My outlaws are in and we always went on the premise of $500 per person worth of goods that they could return with, as tourists are allowed.  Do residents have more stringent limits and although my niece paid for an adult fare is she still given the same limit?  Thanx

I have traveled back and forth as a resident 4 times now, with my son in tow and 3/4 with a laptop in tow as well.  As long as I had documentation that I left the country with the laptop (easy to get in the airport before you leave) and/or digital cameras, other computer stuff, I had no problems with the $500 limit.  As long as a traveler paid to sit on a seat, I believe they have the right to the $500 limit.  I have always planned to use my son's when we came back, for a total of $1000 between us, but it has not been necessary.  Usually the conversation is something like this:

me "I don't have any new electronics, just a lot of stuff for my school."
customs guy "Do you have documentation for it?"
me "Yeah, I went to the Receita Federal before we left."
customs guy "Okay, go on through."

This last time I came through with 300 lbs of luggage - 5 suitcases, 3 carry on bags and a three year old.  Everyone was very nice and I had no problems.

I was stopped and briefly asked about my digital camera on one trip...I showed pictures to the guy that were on the memory card of stuff in both the US and Rio and he seemed satisfied...
