I donīt remember the name of it, but itīs on youtube, a dude doing a documentary too. He was supposed to stay three weeks "living in the favela" on the fourth or fith day he was "urged" to leave the favela, leaving everthing behind.

It is not the rio of 10 years ago.

Pardon the obvious, but what does that mean?  Are you saying it's much more dangerous now?

My thoughts are it was already so dangerous in 97 that it can hardly be more so now?  What does everyone else think?

It has never been in the individual ability to influence this. However 20 years or so ago, it was made as it is now by the individual ability of one person, Brizola, who prohibited the police to go into the favelas.

Everyone is armed and children are killing children.

Thatīs total bullsh*t. About 99% of the favelados are honest and hard working people with no guns. That said, yes there are armed children killing each other.

I would think about the many favelas surrounding other cities, where it is far less dangerous, and much easier to get a foothold and make some progress. Where people still have hope would be my target area.

This are the favelas that Tamashin is talking about. Belfort Roxo in his case. But how do you see it as different. These favelas are just as violent as the 698 you have within the Rio City Limits. A couple of weeks, the Vigario Geral favela was attacked by gangs form the Favela do Lixão and Beira Mar of Duque de Caxias.

Eventough Iīm not everyone else, itīs obviously more dangerous now. 10 years ago they did not dare to attac military instalations to rob them from their weapons. The sheer number of heavy weapons in the Favelas makes it more dangerous. You can now (hapened a couple of times) be shot by a "bala perdida" from more than 2 miles. Just last week a cop IN A HELICOPTER was hit by a bullet (by accident) from an automatic weapon fom at least 850 meters away.

Heidi, you might want to talk to the (American) guy Jeff Zimbalist who did this documentary:
I heard him give a talk, which included filming conditions, when the film was first being distributed last year.

Seems to be mostly about the Afroreggae group from Vigario Geral. They are in quite a safe area of the favela and widely respected.

It's a documentary about Anderson Sa, yes.
And even so, the film maker reported having some problems filming in that favela. There were some days when they could not. As I recall his talk, they were in a couple of situations that were dangerous and others that could have become so.
