oh folks, don't get me wrong!
estou doidinho por forró antigoI really think the stage show (by Aviões e Calcinha P to mention but two) of these bands is very "tongue in cheek"! What, with the dolled up, tight pants, long hair "fabio the most beautiful man in the cosmo" looks of the guy singer and the repetitious dance moves of the scantily clad woman performers (not that I'm complaining about this aspect!). To add that the venues are sooo crowded and people are not even dancing but admiring and handing there phones to the singers with a secret message for them to read! haha ![]() I went to a Calcinha Preta show and bought one of those trashy polyester t-shirts. hehe, well, They gave me a Black G-String too, and I said "uhh, nah, I don't need it" then a girl beside me asked for it. haha, pretty tacky name "Calcinha Preta" né. ![]() But, I'm from a country where it's "Jessie's Girl" or "Blister in the Sun" with a crowd full of drunkeds. hmmm, Forró electronica is a great change! But yes, I prefer traditional styles of Forró, tipo (as mentioned) Luiz Gonzaga, Jackson Do Pandeiro (I love watching his clips also on youtube with the tamborine and little hat), and "esperando na janela" by Gilberto Gil. Try some of these artist that haven't been mentioned: Clara Nunes, Trio Forrozao, Trio Nordestinho, Xapadao . Listen to "Menina Mulher da pele preta" by Forroscana. Seems like a newer style but I'm not sure, I love it. But thanks for the other suggestions, I've don't know 1 percent of the artists people have been talking about! I look forward to listening to all these people! @Zerotres, thanks for singling out the CAS podcasts! I had downloaded the podcasts a while back but didn't really grow found of all the music "beyond the cliches" as I couldn't listen to all tracks without skipping some songs. But I'll listen to the ones you mentioned, my playlist says I haven't listened to them so far!! abraços! |

Forró Electronic (as I had it explained to me, or Pop, is just sometimes too catchy!)
who can go past "Vamo embora, prum bar, beber, cair e levantar... beber cair levantar, beber cair levantar!" ![]() I guess a few of you here! ![]() Edited by danielmarkhobbs - 16 July 2010 at 00:03 |

Oh, I had a really "goosebump" moment when I saw a homeless man busking for money near the overpass or "passarella" in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro one morning. He was dressed in dirty clothing and had a solemn face singing a very romantic forró song about a woman. I can't remember the words. He just had the rhythm of a triangle he was playing backing his low voice. it was great to listen to.

Forró eletronico, or forrock, or whatever it's officially/unofficially called, is catchy. It's pop music; it's supposed to be catchy.

That's an interesting way to look at it. I don't think the average Brazilian agrees though. I don't think I agree! If you said the same about tecnobrega, then I'd agree.Edited by zerotres - 16 July 2010 at 10:54 |

Forró usually features an accordion, with fast, syncopated rhythms similar to samba. In some ways, forro is analogous to the Mariachi Mexico, or cumbia music in Colombia.

a lot of musical snobbery in Brazil... more than in the UK... if one likes poppy forro or god - forbid brega then one must live in the favela or as a previous snobby poster suggested be a maid or taxi driver...
when my rich students ask me what Brazilian music I like.. I answer brega just to confuse them and listen to their snobby comments how I shouldnt listen to that and how awful and even vulgar (as one middle class Missy told me while playing with her I PAd in class)! it is!

I am a brazilian musician and also a producer.Too bad most of the guys here dont really get Forro. And the idea that brazilian music is made to plese other than the people of Brasil.I am in the music bussines. And one of the best things that happened to forro ever is the so called forro eletrononico or forro pop.It is comercial, music for profit. Thanks God it is not brazilian jazz or Mpb.It is music from band who emply 50 to 100 people. And there is lots of those bands touring, generating lots of revenue. The Forro and Setanejo account for more than 60% of all monies made in brasilian music. It is easey to be a moron. If you are old and fat and cant dance. The so called forro univeristario or pe de serra,is the music of samll bands.4 or 5 musicians, small public, older public, slower music. They are great for small places. And they and their fans have a chip in theeir shoulders.Universitario hahhhah every brazilian music is brega or it is not brzilian music.Do you get it?Tacky. The elites think that bossanova was not brega.ahahhahahah tell that to Cae.Or to anyone who really undesrtands brazilan music.People who played the music know it.We are a very romantic people. We do make music for people to make sex with it.And lots of it.No shame about it.I play in California. Our public is mostly brazilian, young and horny. And we play the new forro. The Sertanejo, even some tecno. And why not/That is the musiic brazilans love.WWW.FORROSTARBAND.COM.And we sing in english too hahahahhah
