First off, I've used the search facility, but still require some further pointers. Secondly, thanks in advance.
I'm married to a paulistana (sao paulinha, to be more precise) and we're looking at moving over at some point over the next six to 12 months. She has received a preliminary offer from a UK-based firm to work out there, but no salary specifics have yet been discussed. The average in Britain for that position would be about 115-125 reais per annum. I foresee her dealing with a HR dept that'll probably think 'ah, south America's bound to be cheaper than here' and may offer less. It's not really an expat position - they could find someone else to do it locally, she just has a particular skillset that makes her an attractive candidate. In essence, are the figures above enough for a comfortable Sao Paulo existence? We've already decided on Vila Madalena as somewhere to rent and I see nothing decent there for less than 2k reais per month. I'm under no illusions as to how expensive Brazil is and hope to secure a job in Sampa for an Irish firm in my profession with a salary of possibly around 80k. I don't give a toss about designer clothes or fancy cars, but I do want to travel around Latin America and possibly make it home to Dublin about once a year. So, talking maybe a combined gross of 200k reais between us. My wife thinks 90k reais per annum is a good salary, but I'm not sure if five years absence abroad and her eagerness to return is putting a spin on that. Her family is from SP, so living elsewhere is not really a runner. I know I can talk to friends of hers in Brazil, but I'd like an 'independent' evaluation here, if that's okay. |

I live in Rio and not SP but if your wife is pulling in 120k a year and you don't give a toss about designer crap then you should be fine. On some level Brazil is as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. If you are not buying designer things in Brazil, don't mind eating at second tier restaurants instead of the best and don't have to pay for kids private schooling you should be more than fine. If you are pulling in 200K total you should be able to save and travel.

Don't book the 80k until you have the job. This story has a familiar ring to it. Couple moves to SP with high hopes. Wife lands a job no problem. Hubby confronts the reality gringo job hunting. Wife goes to work each day and enjoying professional accomplishments and expanding social sphere. Hubby stays home 'job hunting' on the internet. Gringo finds gringoes.com and new profession as ...

I agree with jacare 100%.You may well have the abilities associated with an 80k job but actually getting that job may be another matter.
Would you be prepared to work for significantly less? Live off just your wife's wages? 80k jobs are not that easy to come by. |
