Hi there, new to this forum, but it seems pretty darned good. I was fooled 20 years ago into marrying a Brasilian woman. It has been nothing but a struggle from day 1.
my first piece of advice is this: the cultural differences are vast and a bit overwhelming. be prepared to be shocked by your wife's behavior and even more so by her family.
second: -----removed for prudence' sake.
third: do not be careless about your safety. foreigners are the favorite targets of thieves and muggers and rapists.
fourth: the sanitation in Brasil is mostly nonexistent. don't drink the tap water unless it's an emergency!
I don't want to be negative, but I was handed a cartload of nonsense way back when, and if i didn't have a daughter with this woman, i would have been gone long ago. Brasilians love to explain away their societal defects as common anywhere you go. I am not sure they are accurate. once again, don't be offended anyone, I try to be positive about Brasil, but maybe you should watch some brazilian news reports. there are plenty of video websites that have them. that will give you a feel for the unique personality of Brasil.

Oh, I almost forgot why I registered. does anyone have any resources or ideas about legal advice in English in the Macae area? my wife and I have decided to get divorced, and she is trying to tell me all of the money and property that we acquired in the US will be split evenly, but the home her mother "gave" her is hers and is not part of our estate. does this make any sense? she also stated if she has to, she will give the home back to her mom to keep me from getting anything from it. we have been here 4 years and I have spent thousands of hours fixing this house and two others her mother still owns. but she wants me to just call it a loss, and go back to the US with basically nothing.
anyone with some prudent advice?
17 year old American born daughter involved as well.
great website! thanks!

great post! did the bs allergic usalltheway actually say all of those things? wow. I disagree with his assessment of Brasilian food. it is quite good, and I have developed an acute attraction to garlic. the accessibility of good ingredients is a bit sad. you need to travel miles to get anything "fresh" or 'edible" and don't worry, there are enough pesticides to make Monsanto proud. but I digress.
about the style question, I find that Brasilians try just about any style they can find. sometimes it works, sometimes it flops. but when it works, wow they are hot. (please don't judge brasil during carnaval) (I saw 5 guys dressed in only adult diapers, and festooned with dozens of condoms. hmmmm.
Brasil has an abundance of energetic, vital people. they need to channel that energy into more productive avenues of endeavor. just imagine brasil if they were as devoted to education and higher learning as they are with soccer. it can be done, but the government needs to step in and point the masses in the right direction. I teach english here, and there are a few students that are extremely motivated and devoted to learning. unfortunately, I have many m ore who just want to say they can speak English, and don't really want to know how!
ok, that's all for now, peace and tranquilidade~

how exactly would one define "troll"
I'll make sure not to be one!
update: wife is all cozy again...translation: she wants something!!!
I imagine soon I'll be back in the USA...was trying to think about what I'll miss from this place... still thinking!
Cavaleiros beach!!! yeah that's it...
nope, wait, they put up those meter diameter sewage pipes that outfall into the sand on the beach...but don't worry, the sewage sinks in and you can't see it til it hits the slope of the beach, where it gets washed away!!! yay!
ok, i'll stop complaining now...

They did? Please find solace and remember, "...Like sands through an hour glass, so are the days of our lives..." May you eventually find stink free living on the shore of your life, wherever that may be. |
