Did Portuguese in Manaus w 3 different tutors in 1999-2000.
1) The first was a wonderful college professora who spoke great english, but did our first month, we paid her and she went on vacation - never to be seen again... 2) The second dude was good but have lost his contact info... His name was Rosenbaum, used to live in TX, spoke great English, American wife, and ran a small Christian daycare out of the same bldg as his dad's construction company, near the Hotel Slaas Flat, proximo Supermercado Fuji. Good class, used an ancient text book (I swear it had teeth marks from a t-rex), but it gave me a good grammatical foundation, 3) Accelrerated, intensive classes w Penny & Dave Hatcher which was run out of the big Igreja Batista Chapada - across the way from the Amazonas Shopping on Djalma. Most expensive but where I learned the most to actually speak, got clued in culturally and had lots of real conversational experience w native speakers who workedw us on pronunciation. The U.N. used them too for their foreign social workers program in AM. Penny has a degree as linguist - she took an alternative approach to language learning (not just rote mem. drills) and it was a great experience. Real focus on verb tenses. |

hey Ben
were you able to find Penny and David? I am their friends, and used to help/work with them on the Portuguese pronunciation classes, and I can tell, they are the best. How long will you be in MAO? if you need anything let me know.... Dao |
