Being here has made me become more conservative, less government is better at least in the context of Brasil. Here the tax burden and government size is similar to the Nordic countries, but with maybe 5% of the infrastructure/public services. Without tax/government reform I think Brazil will never become truly a world economic power.

In a way it's not just the politicians that are corrupt, but the whole society. What is the jeitinho but low level participation. Often in Brazil the most mundane lifestyle requires participating in some form of bribery or fiscal evasion. A guy could go crazy down here without cutting a few corners, and it would be hard to make a go at business without joining in. So in a way a large percent of the population is compromised, if it is only just a matter of survival. And if you want to really get ahead, it's 'pay to play' here. The politician, he's just doing what anyone else would. Some say the more they steal the better they are at their jobs. There is kind of a corruption trickle down where getting more for his constituents means a bigger trough to feed in.

The don't need to shout; technology has come to the rescue Right now in Rio there are pick-ups circulating the streets, loaded with sound systems blasting samba songs (written especially to have the name of the candidate in the lyrics) to a receptive audience. And the plebs seem to love it!

There is this law that's called "Lei da ficha limpa"...
