After reading many of the posts, I was able to master the art of translations, certifications and registrations of my documents to get married here in Brazil. Now I have two questions which I did not see answered here specifically....after the marriage, I will need to go to FP (in Sao Paulo...how fun) to register for permanent visa. I have seen a list of documents that I will need, however, I realize that I need to go to FP to get accurate list.

1) Is the criminal background check from US (where I am from) really required if applying based on marriage? Not trying to hide anything, just trying to avoid more work and $$.

2) After I go to FP and make the application for Visa Permanente, when would it be possible for me to travel to US again. I thought I saw something about getting Protocolo right away from FP, but I want to verify this before I go there.

Any information is helpful!!

Not sure about that. Some say it´s not necessary anymore at all. Others say a background check by the state or county polic is enought.

Probably it depends who you talk to , even at the PF. But I guess you have to wait untill the strike a te the PF is finished, at the moment they don´t even issued passports, only emergency passports, so they don´t even bother to attend foreigners.

As soon as you manage to file sucessfully for the PERMANÊNCIA you´ll get your PROTOCOLO and you can leave Brazil. Independent how long you pretend to stay outside Brazil, inform the Polícia Federal about your trip.
Nothing worse, than being unreachable for the PF, they may cancel your application imediatly!
