I'm moving to São Paulo in a couple of weeks for work. I'm very excited, but everyone keeps talking about how dangerous it is and how it's getting worse every day. I've had dozens of people state that I will definitely get mugged there - possibly several times. How do people carry money or come home from stores with groceries and stuff? I'm not going to have a car, so I'm just trying to figure out how to get from stores to my house. I guess a cab?

How often do you guys get mugged? Also, where do you keep your ID and bank cards?

depends a lot on where you live- where will you live and work? chances are if you're working for a multinational you'll be fine.

my inlaws live in a crummy area of SP and we all just keep our heads down and try to be smart. don't wear a nice watch or act like a fool. nobody's going to rob you for your groceries, but if you're dressed up to go out on friday night, be careful. take cabs.
when i visit our folks, i leave everything that i'd hate to lose at home. carry a copy of your ID, not the real one. bank card only on the day you want to use it. money gets divided and put into different pockets. if you do get mugged, don't resist. we lived there for a few months, our kid went to school there, it was disturbing at first, but you get used to it.

but again, this is in a REALLY BAD area. you will most likely not be in a place like this.

I agree with the above. I dont think you have to worry about anyone taking your groceries though, even in a rough area. Only keeping as much cash on you as you need for that day, planning atm trips for daylight hours, not carrying credit cards and dressing down should be enough. If you have an expensive phone you may want to get a cheap prepaid to make calls on the street/bus.

Remember to breathe! Getting mugged is not inevitable, even in SP. If it happens just fork over your stuff, dont resist and its very, very unlikely that youll be hurt. Also...don let people/the media/reality keep you from getting out and enjoying yourself. You do need to be aware and use common sense, but theres no need to be afraid.

ETA: to answer your questions, we are not robbed with any frequncy and I keep my brazilian ID in my pocket. The passport stays locked up.

I think if you are smart and pay attention you are safe for the most part. Obviously Sao Paulo has crime issues, but I have never really had any issues and I live in a somewhat shady neighborhood. That being said I try to carry as little cash/cards as I can.

One’s options in life must be painfully few if one decides to live life under the conditions described.

Living in a constant state of paranoia is life in SP/Salvador/Rio....

I am generally not any more careful than I am in Washington DC and haven't had any issues here. Even lived in a favela for six months (which is probably the safest place to live), but in general if you are not flashing wealth/cash I think you are okay. If you are living in Jardins and driving a sweet car that is another story.

People, the locals especially, are a little paranoid. The TV news dwells on lack of security. That said, Brazil is a bit dangerous and one should be prepared mentally for an assulto, mugging, though it might never happen.

I think you just have to try to appear aware and confident, many muggers target the weaker looking daydreamer looking types. Not saying all the time obviously.
But the idea of carrying your money in a belt and fake wallet (or purse for the ladies) would be a good idea in down town Sao Paulo so i have been told.

How dangerous is Sao Paulo? While there, I was the victim of a burglary by the NET TV guys, my brother-in-law was held up at gunpoint, my sister-in-law was also separately held up at gunpoint, my friend was robbed at an ATM, and another friend had his briefcase stolen from the locked trunk of his car.

That being said, I agree that in general if you keep your head down, don't flash any money, cell phones, jewelry, and keep to the main streets you should be ok. Be aware and make sure that you look like you are aware.
