On what document do you have to write duration of your trip?

It sounds like you've done this before Nikki - is it normal protocol to return the old passport with holes punched in the info page, or will I need to include a specific note attached to my old passport stating that I will need it back, due to the Brazilian tourist visa that's in it?

Another question: I am wondering what to write for the "duration" of my trip - I ask because I will be moving there permanently on my next trip (I will be marrying a Brazilian shortly and will be applying for permanent residency soon after). Is it best to put "indefinite" "permanent move" or something else? Obviously I want to be honest (I have nothing to hide) but my concern is having them reject my application because of what I write in the space for "duration".

For the American passport, I don't think it matters.  I'd put something like 6months or 1 year, because you will likely visit the US again at some point to visit, right?

You don't need to fill in that section and even if you did say "indefinite," the US wouldn't care.
Oh and you don't need to go to the US to renew your passport, you can do it through the consulate.

Just an update: I didn't see Kirk's response (above) before sending in my application, and I ended up putting "undetermined" for the duration of my trip. Got both my old and new passports back this last week, so I'm good on that.

One thing to note for others who haven't renewed their passports previously - they will send back your old passport separately from your new one for "security reasons". When I called to inquire about my old passport (didn't know they would be sent separately), I was told to expect my old passport to arrive within 15 days of when my new passport arrived.
