Nothing is that simple in Brazil.  If you do a search, then you will find a much more detailed response.

First, you need to take the long form of your birth certificate to the consulate with jurisdiction over where you were born so that they can “authenticate” it.  Once you are in Brazil your birth certificate must be translated by an official translator and then registered at a special cartorio.  (After your documents are translated, you might need to take them to one cartorio to get the translators signature recognized, but don’t confuse that with the special cartorio where you have to register them).  That will take you about a month (2 weeks for each step).

The cartorio may ask you to present a CPF (though it is not really necessary according to “the law”) so you may want to apply for one at the Banco do Brasil while you wait for your documents to be translated and registered.

What you want is a despachante (someone to do the running around for you to get things translated and registered) and not a lawyer.  The price will depend on where you live in Brazil and what your time frame is.

The single status document comes from your home country’s consulate in Brazil.  The American consulate makes you register in advance for an appointment and you must pay in cash with exact change for the service in Rio.
