my wive doesn't want to transfer some money from santander to bdb because she is worried about some taxes that might get levied. I say there is no worry, but I am not really basing it on anything. Basically the lines are long as f**k for the atms here (small town life) and I don't want to wait all day in line.

if we transfer from our home computer santander to Bdb (someone else's acct) and then when my wife is in BH this weekend she transfers from Bdb (wife's account) to santander (our joint acct)will there be any problem? or is this typical unfounded worry? (this morning we...err I, dispelled the myth that banks charge r14 for every online transfer)

her main concern is at the end of the year the tax man having questions about the moving money, I'm off to the bank anyway but want to arm myself with info for next time!

I guess she's worried about CPMF, which doesn't exist anymore, but used to be some 0.38%.

There are no taxes for transfering money from one bank to another, only bank fees.
Check your bank´s conditions, it tells you how much they charge if you transfer money from you account at SANTANDER to BANCO DO BRASIL. The amount most likely will appear during the online banking process.

Don´t know about SANTANDER, fortunatly I´m not a cliente there anymore, but ITAÚ charges about  R$ 8,- or 9,- for transfers to other bank account. Only within ITAÚ accounts it´s free.

what is CPMF

Contribuição Provisória sobre a Movimentação ou Transmissão de Valores e de Créditos e Direitos de Natureza Financeira

This tax was charged from 1997 till 2007 :

thanks MA. Actually Santander doesn't charge anything for transfers......so I guess I was right and my wife was wrong.

I of course will phrase it more tactfully.

I regularly transfer between Itau and HSBC in both directions with no fees levied by either bank.

Yes, that tax would have been CPMF.
