I enjoy observing people and I think that idiosyncrasies just make life more enjoyable.

Here is one. Maybe I'm the odd one here but I always found it amusing how Brazilians eat their hamburgers wrapped in a napkin

Sure, I can understand the reason- protect from bacteria (though bacteria also thrive in napkins) It just seems somewhat out of place relative to their attitude about all the other "dangers" they face in their day-to-day lives.

Still nothing compared to eating pizza with fork and knife...or even worse - with ketchup (sorry Rio)

Don't they eat hamburgers wrapped in a napkin to stop the slop of toppings pouring out into their hands?

Yes, perhaps you are right.

Yes, but they also pick up salgados from a plate using a paper napkin rather than their bare hand.  I think that it's a hygiene thing - more cultural than anything.

I just find it curious, then, that Brazilians are more concerned with getting dirty hands than other people. You can go into a McDonald's in a big city in Europe or the US and you'll be able to tell who is Brazilian - with the odd exception - based on whether or not they grab their hamburger with a napkin.

What's weird about that? I've always done that, and I've never set foot in Brazil.

Itīs not about getting dirty hands. Itīs about not getting dirt into your mouth.

I get scolded severely if I do not use a napkin, and I am told in an almost superior manner that Brazilians regard `gringos` as dirty. As Brazilians generally think that the civilized world is contained within their borders I guess that means all the rest of us.
I find this amusing in a country where toilet sanitation appears to be totally off the radar. On any busy night, even in an up-market establishment, a visit to the `john` can be like a visit to the gladiator pit of ancient Rome.   At least if they have napkins you can grab a handful - as you can be almost sure there won`t be any where you are headed.

I don't eat a big Mac in a napkin becaus you get your hands dirty when you pry it from the box. A whopper comes in a paper wrap in which I eat it. Why should I get my hands dirty if I don't have to.

Salgados are usually fatty on the outside, why not use a napkin.

IMHO only pizzas with a hard crust can be eaten with your hands, otherwise the either the toppings fall off, or they unite when you fold your slice, in which case the pizza becomes something like a calzone.

You definitely can't eat Italian pizzas with your hands. The dough is just too thin.
