![]() Topic: CPF magically becomes "regular"Posted: 26 June 2012 at 10:40 |

My CPF was with "pendencias" for years after I failed to declare income tax (I left Brazil in 2003 and just didn't bother to inform them of my departure). Since I'm now planning to move back, I went on the receita federal website and, to my surprise, my CPF is suddenly listed as "em situaçao regular."
Does anyone know how this happens? Not complaining at all just wondering how the hell it fixed itself. Edited by tbird - 28 June 2012 at 06:40 |

The answer is simple. A CPF is your tax id - making it regular means you can now pay tax - a non-resident can purchase property which involves taxation.

Bubbles, thank you. But.. the point is that I didn't do anything to "make it regular."

I read somewhere, (trying to find the info again) that you will automatically become regular after a few years if the reason for you being irregular is not serious or below certain limits (not sure how they are defined).
I might be remembering this wrong though, it was a long time ago I read about this on a govt site. Edited by Twirly - 28 June 2012 at 10:40 |

I think you are correct Twirly, I had a friend whose CPF was dirty due to her ex husband bouncing some checks in their joint bank account. However, apparently after 7 years the liability goes away and her CPF returns to normal status. |

I heard it was just a 5 year wait for bouncing checks.

I believe that what you guys are referring to is the time it takes to get your name cleared after it is included on the SERASA or SPC debtor list.

I left BR in 2006 and never filed again. When I rt in 2011 I expected my cpf to be blocked for not declaring after 5yrs, but no. Between 2007-2008, apparently the Rec. Fed relaxed the filing requirements if you made less than xxxxx per year (can't remember the min.). I'm sure that has st to do w your situation. IMO
