Hello,

I am flying into Sao Paulo for just one Wednesday night in mid-July and I am trying to find an affordable place to stay and decide how to spend my time in the morning before I leave again at 5pm.

Does anyone have suggestions?

I looked into the airport hotel options-- the Marriott specifically. It looks nice, but a little pricey. I would like to get a quick feel for the city before I leave too, and I am looking for a place that is easy and safe to get to from the airport -- I arrive at 8:15pm.

Thanks!
Jenn

The Marriott at the airport is a long way from town really - nice if you want to visit friends in the prison, or take in some brown-water rafting on the Sao Paulo sewer system, but otherwise fairly remote. It is a nice enough hotel though.

Thank you for all the quick responses. Is it safe to travel by metro at night from the airport to the places mentioned? Or should I plan to take a cab?

Are there things you recommend I do/see/eat for my one morning in Sao Paulo before I am back at the airport by 4pm?

Thanks again,
Jenn

go cab to and from GRU, just to avoid the drama of the metro.
Should be max 110 reais each way.
Also , if you need to be back by 4pm , make sure you allow enough time for traffic jams and delays which are frequent on a daily basis in SP on the city- airport routes (should you choose to go to city centre)

No idea if you speak any portugese, but i was gonna suggest if you did, you can try set a price off the meter for the trip back.
Ive saved up to 40 reais sometimes doing this, but it depends on the situation and cabby.

Hope this helps : )

Couple of things:

There isn't a Metro out to the Airport. It's taxi, the bus or the Airport Shuttle coach.

You won't be able to get a taxi on the meter from the Airport to the city easily. It's a fixed fee, payable in advance at the airport, depending on where you are going. I think Paulista Area is R$103 at the moment.
