Third parties can pick up visas with:

A signed letter from you (might need to be notarized, depending on the consulate) explicitly stating who, with what document (their license number and state that issued it for example), on what date can pick up what visa
and your passport

in hand.

It can be a relative, friend or paid 3rd party as long as they have the letter.

I feel your pain KellyGuy- I'm also a teacher waiting for my visa for Brazil with a confirmed flight on July 21st.  I'm also dealing with Ernst and Young- which has been confusing enough!  They really have not been clear on the process and what my next steps are.  I however was told that I could mail the paperwork to the Brazilian consulate in Chicago, along with my passport which freaks me out, and that the consulate would send the passport and visa to me using express mail as well.  So, this is what I did- saving me that trip to Chicago.  I have also emailed the Chicago consulate about questions on my visa, and they have actually been extremely helpful- responding back to me within hours of emailing them.  Have you tried this?

I went to the consulate yesterday and gave them my paperwork--I thought I only would have to do this once the visa was ready, and that the application had been made by Ernst and Young. Their communications with me have been incredibly confusing.

My visa will be ready to pick up on the 3rd, but I'm having it express mailed to my sister's house in Gilroy, CA. I'm leaving tomorrow in a moving van, to go store my stuff at my sister's place and get ready to leave. I fly out of SF on the 16th.

mngrl, where will you be teaching?

That's what I thougrht based on my emails from Ernst and young too! They also told me that my visa was ready for pick up even though I hadn't sent in any documents yet- very frustrating few days sorting that out! I'm teaching in Porto Alegre, where are you headed? I can't imagine the added stress of moving your stuff across the country before leaving.

Who knows when Itamaraty will resume work? When will this strike end? I heard there will be another meeting today. As last Friday meeting didn't bring any results.
