![]() Topic: how long does the consulate take?Posted: 20 June 2012 at 16:48 |

The company (Ernst and Young) that is helping my school get my work visa, told me last Thursday that my visa was submitted, and that it would take up to 5 days to be ready for pickup.
Today is Wednesday, and the Brazilian Consulate in Chicago still shows my visa as 'received', with no progress on the application approval. How long do they typically take? I am ready to drive a UHaul van out to California from Wisconsin, and I will fly to Brazil on the 16th of July. It doesn't leave me a lot of time between now and then for the drive and storing my stuff in CA, that's for sure. I'm almost wishing I hadn't accepted the job. I don't deal very well with bureaucracy, and I know I'll have LOTS more to deal with in Brazil. |

Hey Kelly Guy, sorry for the bureaucracy you are facing! As for the visa, you need to have someone get ahold of the consulate (or show up in person) in order to check up on it. Consulats are known for being mega bureaucratic and terrible at informing people.
If you are worried about being able to collect your visa on time before moving, I would recommend hiring a visa service to receive it and then forward it to you. If you need me to refer you a good visa service, I would happy to do so ;) |

Well that´s very optimistic from E&Y ! ![]() First of all, it´s not about the visa yet. They just applied for the work authorization in Brazil at the MINISTÉRIO DE TRABALHO. Only when the application has been aprooved, they´ll recieve some kind of confirmation and THEN you can apply for the visa at your local Brazilian consulate. If you are lucky, they may issue the visa in 5 days !?!? But at the current stage of the process, either you, much less the consulate in the US, can do anything but wait. The consulate depends on the decision from Brasília, they don´t decide about work authorizations, they just issue the visa, once the permission has been granted. If you intend to work and live in Brazil, have more patience ! ![]() |

Yes, you're right, I need to have more patience, and that is the attitude I'm taking now. One way or another, I will get to Brazil, and my mentor teacher has suggested that I enter on a tourist visa and have the school get the work visa after I arrive.
There apparently is a good reason for the delay--Brazilian consulates all over the U.S. are on strike, for at least a day and maybe longer. So for now I just have to wait, and enjoy summertime here in Wisconsin. It's cooler today, so I think I'll take my rowboat over to the nearest lake and catch some panfish! |

I wouldn´t do that !!! First as a tourist you are NOT allowed to work. Second you have to leave Brazil again, in order to apply for the visa. And last, once you would come as a tourist, the school wouldn´t make much effert in order to get the work authorization. They´ll think, why wasting money and time, you are already here. ![]() |

Oh, interesting! Thanks for that information.
Well, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, certainly. The school bought me a ticket to fly from San Francisco to Brazil on July 16. I have to drive a van from Wisconsin to California (typically a five day drive). And my visa, if it is ever approved, will be at the consulate in Chicago. As far as I'm concerned, it is up to the school to figure it out. If I don't have a visa in hand on July 16th, I'm simply not going to get on the plane. |

The brasilian consulates have been on strike. Haven't heard if it is over. You might want to follow this.

See, that makes sense to you and to me. When I asked the Ernst and Young representative, they said that the visa MUST be picked by me, personally, in Chicago. I know this isn't true, simply from reading the consulate website--they allow third parties to apply for and pick up visas for people. |
