I can truly sympathize with you living in the interior and having to put up with the "Brazil way".

I also live in the interior

I also live in the interior but I, unlike you, only have a 40 minute drive to get me to any number of beaches to look at the bitches.Smile but believe me it also gets old living by the beach, I did for almost 5 years 75 meters away and it got to me after awhile

If I were you I would do what @Hp suggested and get away for a spell to kind of re charge your mind set or if need be go to Spain its great now with the weather and believe it or not quite reasonable considering everything that is going on

Wish you the best.

I live a block away from the Beach and use it as much as possible, its free to use and has some amazing views.

Good for running or going for long walks either on the promenade or with your feet getting wet whilst walking along the waters edge.

Some times when the water looks clean enough like it has done recently I go for a dip, its been so clear over the last few months I'd say the visibility would be just over two meters almost like the Caribbean.

Its lined with bars for enjoying a early evening drink and mostly always has some life and some buzz about it if you find you ever get bored just head down the beach to see whats going on, entertain your eyes.

I love it when we come back from a club and around 7/8 am the suns coming up and all the old people are going for their morning exercise, if we are feeling strong enough we finish the night with a caipirinha at a beach bar.

I wouldn't bother living in Brazil if I didn't have easy access to the sea/beach and warm tropical weather, those two things make up for so many headaches this place can cause.

The beaches are the best things, apart from the women (of course) that Brazil has to offer IMHO.

and I think with that, you summed up what many people thinking about a move to Brazil are looking for. Quality of life that allows you to ignore some of the headaches.

I can sympathise with the OP - working in Brazil drives me nuts: the laws, the work-ethic, the dishonesty and corruption (and that's just my co-workers!! ) but when I get to my sitio, lock the gate and load the 12-gauge, I remember why I left London, and Brazil seems worth it again. I've never really been that interested in beaches, but set me lose in the Mata with a machete and a water bottle, and I am in heaven.

hpeak.. But living REAL close to the beach is even better.  The whole reason I don't travel is paranoia due to plane crashes. Probably a lousy excuse nowadays.. knock on wood though. This is the advantage to living in Europe: everything is much more accessibe.

Boycie.. 12 gauge is good, especially with that guy that executed those people at a fazenda. Did anybody ever find out why he did that? The motive? Some of the craziest things happen. Not far from here a guy shot a guy with 2 kids in the back of the head because he wanted his Honda Titan motorcycle. (That's why I ride around on the non-sexiest thing possible).

And that's why I don't think living here is worth the hassle. If you can afford something nice (which isn't easy in such an expensive country), it makes you a target. Fear influences your choices. I don't want to live like that.

Sorry you've lost me? are you staying your worried about personal safety and that's why you live in a small town in the interior?

If I had the money I wouldn't think twice about driving my Mercedes or Porsche around Zona Sul Rio or Barra for that matter, plenty of nice cars to be seen around here that don't get any trouble.

Agree with that. If I could move my life and home anywhere else in the world and keep it the same, I would, but that is not possible. The home and lifestyle are like they are because this is Brazil, and because Brazil is like it is. Sadly with that comes the lack of security. Time will tell if the security risk is going to get any better - I only see it getting worse, with the majority of the country completely lawless. It is therefore chance and our own doings that keeps us safe in this country, and that will put off people who have a choice about living here.

Boycie - You live in Europe thats why? haha, Brazil is a huge country, i live in the interior also but i wouldnt have any trouble driving or riding most things here, just need to be careful and dont stop too long on the bandit highways, but things can happen anywhere. My friends young son was pulled off his bike by someone doing a strangle choke on him as he rounded a corner, he lives in the city. The police laughed when he called to report it.
Brazil is a huge country, not one person can say this or that is correct, especially people living in Sao Paulo or RG do Sul, its a different world. Most cosmopolitan cities are pretty much the same anyway it doesnt matter where you are, McDonalds in Sao Paulo is like a McDonalds in Madrid.
I was talking to a guy today and we got talking about boats, he said he used to own one but the guys at the Marina used to take parts from his boat to repair others, so he ended up selling it.

Finrudd - Believe it or not, but i found some parts of London more hostile than here at times apart from the obvious Xenophobia that i find here of course. People getting out of their cars in London, to fight people and knife crime. There is crime here but i dont see much of it, but we have to be security conscious i guess. I am similar, live in a Sitio and enjoy nature more than the city life.

Spongeblob - Get yourself a Sitio or other land and start growing things or keep animals if your prefer. Get out there with your hoe and machete and start cleaning up while you bake in the midday sun. You wont have any time to be bored and you'll sleep like a baby at night, i promise you that...Smile

Yeah I agree the nicer parts of the Brazilian bigger city's are like Europe and they have the price tag to go with them, often more expensive.

I'd go as far as saying our life style for the money we spend would actually be better in Europe, but who in the right mind wants to be there right now?
In a couple of years I'd like to move back there, maybe after the world cup.

Anthony Bourdain was on T.V doing a program in Chile last night, now that place looked interesting - any one ever been? to compare it to Brazil.
