I am wondering if anyone know where they need a very good chef ( I specialize in international cuisine) in in the Floripa area. I dont speak Portuguese for sh*t but I have worked at many great places in New England and California. I have Autorizaçao de Trabalho document and will be contacting the large hotels on beira mar norte. Any suggestions on other places to contact? I need to work until I open my own restaurant.

Brazil has got alot of restaurants I suggest you go by order, if they charge below 20 R$ for dish don't bother entering, if you really are a chef.

I wish I could encourage you on this (heaven knows, Floripa NEEDS a good chef, as well as an excellent restaurant), but IMO the resto scene in Fpolis is horrific! Over-priced, poor quality, lack of creativity, and mediocre service (at best) pretty much sums up the offerings. In the town of Santo Antonio de Lisboa (between Centro and Jurere), there is probably the best restaurant scene on the island (seafood being the main fare). You might try knocking on a few doors there. Yet for clientele who would truly appreciate 'international cuisine', you'd be better off working in Sampa (but I know, as far as living, not the same quality of life as Floripa). Boa sorte! EDIT: While not actually located on the island, maybe a visit to this resort might be of interest to you professionally.... Ponta dos Ganchos. Edited by Gringo.Floripa - 07 June 2012 at 22:39 |

I might bark, but I don't bite.

Actually, I've been thinking this about Brazilian food in general lately. Maybe it's where I'm located, but the food is pretty boring. On the salgadinho side, there's empadas, coxinhas, and the likes. Lunch is usually a meat and beans and rice. Even if you go to a churrascaria like Porcão, they basically just have meat, pasta, little seafood, and expensive drinks. Cakes and other desserts are very poor quality. I made better cakes as a kid than the overpriced all-icing things they sell here. It's hard to find exotic cheese and in every store I go into, there are 2 kinds of cereal to buy. Seems like the only thing they have here that has some "kick" to it is caxaça. I guess I'm going through a blah period. No expat, kurtz, Amsterdam, I still have no plans to move anytime soon. |

It's not you, nor where you are. Then you start thinking, "let's try another restaurant", but it doesn't matter, they all have the same freaking items on the menu. Maybe one or two things are different, but it's uncommon to find anything new and interesting. As for dessert, I've been told by the owners that people rarely order dessert. So it's really an afterthought for them. They don't care about having anything good and fresh, if they will just have to throw it away when it goes bad because no ordered it. |

I totally agree with the last two posts. Unless you go to some place thats incredibly expensive, like GD's R$ 800 a lunch restaurants, it's basically all the same, each one with a little twist.
I've been to Chinese restaurants, and I make better food. I've been to Indian restaurants and my curry is better. My tacos are better than in most mexican restaurants I know. I make a mean souvlaki and gyros, something I have yet to see. Restaurant food in Brazil, unless you're willing to fork over a fortune sucks. It's bland and all tastes the same. I know I'm generalizing. You can indeed get some good food in Bahia and other places for a decent price. It's rare though. |
