My family is moving to Brazil next month. We decided to just take suitcases and rebuy most things in Brazil. But we kept some nice kitchen items (Kitchenaid mixer/blender/etc) and our laptops/ipads/ipods. Besides those things our luggage is basically clothes/shoes/books/personal items. We are planning on taking 13 suitcases for the 5 of us though. Any suggestions to make it easier? We are coming on a temporary resident visa. I read that we could each apply for an exemption with customs. How much is that and where do we apply?

Well, check out this opportunity to import things tax free!
On the link that Kirk posted, you need to scroll down to "Moving to Brazil", then see if anything applies. Is one of you "returning to Brazil" from a 1 year or more absence? If so, make sure that person maxes out on the items now allowed in tax free. I am absolutely stunned though, still not believing it. When I moved to the US from Europe, the entire container entered the US tax free because it was accompanying our move on a J-visa with then 2 year limit. How come such an opportunity does not exist for immigrants to Brazil? |

Please note that the information in link seems to exclude baggage that you bring with you on the plane!

You can bring in your "house" on a temporary work visa, but if you leave you need to take the stuff back with you, or you pay the taxes on the high side.

Well, can you bring all your household stuff? If so, it is a great opportunity to bring in everything you need or might want to sell in a big 7 or 10 or even 21 ft container. This is your chance. If it is exempt. I don't know if it is though, the above cited website does not say it is for people moving to Brazil the first time. Then how much do they check the inventory so they could see that you don't leave things behind after 2 or more years? I mean, import 20 used laptops and digital cameras and sell them on mercadolivre who can tell when it is in your container with all your dirty underwear and the gardenhose? You might even advertise this as a shipping opportunity for all the expats on this site thereby financing your move. |
