I think Brazilians are apprehensive about volunteers because the volunteers could run to the labour court and say that you didn't pay them. And the Brazilian laws will most likely favour the "volunteer". If someone came to me and wanted to volunteer, I would say NO. Most social programs, at least the ones here, are funded by the municipality, and employees are paid.

Hey does anyone here know anything about charitable work in Brazil? It's always been my plan to devote some significant resources in my post professional life (or convert my professional life in-) to charitable work. I am naturally related to health related issue and children. The goal is to do something for the lowest and most vulnerable in the world. I know Brazilian government has plenty of programs, and they probably don't want foreigners to mess with them, but what are some of the big cracks that you can see people falling through ... especially those that I have a chance of managing with a small charity perhaps in partnership with another non-governmental organization (NGO). Something may be that does not involve getting too touchy with favela and mafia bosses.
Any ideas, and NGOs that you know, much appreciated. |

Why don't you volunteer to give Brazilians supplementary driving lessons?

Casa São José has a small posto de saúde, they get donations from drug
companies, but always need more. They need a volunteer psychologist for
the kids and mothers, they need volunteer dentists, they need volunteer
nutritionists, health equipment ( their x-ray machine just broke down - we are about to either get it fixed or buy a new one).... there is tons of health-related stuff you can help out with.
By the way, all of the societies on the link above accept members from any nationality. I'm in the CIS and I'm not Canadian. It's a way to absolutely KNOW that you are helping. As well as raising money and knowing where and towards what it goes, we participate in volunteering, purchasing, sourcing. Any talent and value helps. And we do need people to help. ![]() |

Just wanted to give an update in case someone else was looking for a volunteer opportunity...
I found www.cvv.org.br - same thing as The Samaritans, offers a hotline and email/chat support and theyre in a bunch of cities. Portuguese needs to be up to snuff for obvious reasons, and seems like a good group. I dropped a line to the Vitoria chapter, hoping it works out! |
