I have been offered sponsorship for a work visa (as an english teacher)by someone I consider reasonably reliable. He wants R3000. One of my concerns is that I am here on an expired visa. Does this make the situation impossible?

It's practically impossible to get visa as an English teacher unless it's to be head of dept. in a international school or university (and you have qualifications and experience to match that). Furthermore, the visa needs to go through the scrutiny of the MTE where is undergoes a resident labour market test. I can't see one person in a well-paid public job risking his future for a mere three grand, let alone splitting this with the chain of people that would have to beinvolved in furnishing your with bogus visa.

The person who was going to sponsor me was a private person with his own company. I am hearing all the time that the attitude of the govt. to native english speaker teachers is changing because the language (or lack of) is becoming a real problem. I live in Rio, they're even getting the police in Copacabana taught English!

it's not just the illegality of it, it's the risk: you will be beholden to this turkey afterwards.  (or perhaps extorted by this turkey).  i know you said he seems relatively reliable but how far are you willing to trust him?
personally, i wouldn't want to have that sort of obligation to anyone i had any chance of seeing ever again.

Even if it were true that you could obtain the purchase of such a work visa, there are simply too many reasons which probably make this a bad idea. IMO.

R$ 3000,- in advance I guess ! Right ? So you can consider it a scam !

Also, if he really would manage to get the work authorization aprooved for you. You have to leave Brazil, in order to apply for the visa. The visa doesn´t come autmaticly WITH the work authorization and visas are NOT issued in Brazil.

Besides, like mol said, it´s impossible to get a work authorization for a simple English teacher for a regular language school.

If I were you and I trusted the person I would go for it. Don't let anyone on this forum discourage you with the word 'impossible'. I'm here to tell you, nothing in this country is impossible. People in this forum told me it was impossible to open a bank account on a tourist visa. Did it. People on this forum told me I couldn't open a company on a tourist visa legally. Did it. The so called experts on this forum
don't know as much they think they do.
