OK. I appreciate the help, even though I like MOL's answer better :). We will work on getting the BR passport. |

We are, or course, referring only to re-entry into Brazil rather than exit from Brazil as the outward journey does not matter (in the sense that Meredith could be leaving Brazil for good and taking her child with her; with absolutely no intention of applying for a Brazilian passport). In such circumstances the child will already have arrived in country with the parents. Are you suggesting the PF guy might be minded to send the child back on the next plane? No way! He is a Brazilian on Brazilian soil with a BC to prove that. Edited by man of leisure - 15 May 2012 at 07:00 |

He's Brazilian on Brazilian soil with a Brazilian BC, and was born in Brazil. As such he must be able to show a Brazilian passport to leave the country under the Brazilian passport law.
Of course there are other possible obstacles for the OP. child of Leisure has a UK passport, whilst the OP's child has a US passport, and even though both start with U, there is of course a huge difference between the two. UK citizens enter Brazil on a visa waiver whilst US citizens need a tourist visa. As the child has no tourist visa, the airline company might not let the OP board the plane, as they have no way of certifying the authenticity of the BC, and if the child fails to enter they are responsible to fly it and the mother back. You may very well have been lucky, but what you propose is against the law and may cause several problems, as the law is quite clear, Brazilians must travel from and to Brazil on a Brazilian passport. Of course the Brazilian consulate will not provide a tourist visa for a Brazilian citizen. Edited by sven - 15 May 2012 at 07:59 |

I don't have the link-- it's on thet net somewhere, but the State Department makes it very clear:
- Leave Brazil on Brazilian passport; - Enter the US on US passport; Just invert the process on the way back. However, the US State Department says to travel to other countries, must use US Passport. Yeah right, who wants to pay reciprocity fees!! |

i would be much more concerned that the child would not be allowed to board the plane for the return trip.
of course, any reasonable person would say, oh a baby, with family, etc but all you need is one checkin agent having a crummy day or one PF who decides that the hourly example is going to be YOU. yes, chances are it won't happen, but why would you take the chance? |

I also thought about the possibility that they wouldn't let my child board the plane because he has a US passport without a Brazilian visa and a BC that may not be good enough.
We will not risk it and will get the BR passport. We were thinking worse comes to worse to get a BR passport while in NY. But I do NOT want to wait to do that. If agendamento in June means passport in July then I'm good to go. We'll agendar today. |

No problem there, the problem is to get the appointment at the PF, once you handed in the application and documents, it takes max. 2 weeks for the PF to issue the passport and you can pick it up. So plenty of time, if you get an appointment in June untill your trip in August! ![]() |
