Hi, I was wondering if anybody could help me on knowing what are the costs in living in Brazil? I found some good info here: http://www.off2brazil.com/money-and-costs-in-brazil but I would like to know more in detail how much I need for accommodation, food and party in Rio?

Thanks for your help!

I dont have any practical information for you since Im not sure how long you're wanting to stay, but my general advice would be to double the amount you think youll need. Things are VERY expensive here and customer service can be spotty (read: dont even think about returning something that broke 2 minutes after taking it out of the box) so small things can easily become large expenses.

Dont be discouraged - Brazil is a great place to be! Its just not a place Id want to try to be on a shoe string.

if you come from a country where you find food and expenses to be cheap and go to brazil, you will surely be shock with the prices lol but after 2-3months of stay, you'll get used to it :) hehe

sucks you had the experience, but I've never had problems returning anything. and as far as prices go, just like oh every where else in the world you can find both cheap things and affordable things. This insistence that everything is expensive here is silly.

I 2nd hpeak's view. I return or exchange things all the time with little problem, and we always seem to find reasonably priced places to eat. Although...as the world in general naturally becomes ever more expensive... Brasil is leading the way in many catagories.

coming from London only recently, I've certainly had to cut certain luxuries out of my regular shopping list. Things which are disproportionately more expensive here: Parma/Serrano ham, smoked salmon, good cheese, good wine, corona (WTF?), clothes, pots of pans (of equal quality), the list goes on...

However, the meat here (with the exception of Lamb) is of great quality and really affordable. Fillet Mignon was a luxury in the UK, here it is standard stuff. Fruit and vegies are super cheap here, even the exotic fruit which costs a fortune abroad. The deli counters here are packed with funny looking pastries and while they may cause a heart-attack - most of them are really tasty!

The moral of the story for me? For every "European" luxury that I can’t put in my shopping basket here, I instead put a local product. And when you’re halfway through eating a perfectly ripe mango, who needs smoked salmon anyway?

hpeak - maybe he's referring to technology products.

There are certainly some things that are dispoportionally higher here. We just have to suck and up and pay up. I just ordered a tiny 11,6 inch HP laptop. For the same money in the US, you can get a same-size laptop with that is completely decked out. Kids clothes are very expensive here. The only thing that I can think of that may be cheaper is some food products. I wish this weren't the case...

maybe they meant electronics, but the person wasn't specific in what they said. And I stand by my comment.
