I'm a massive fans of hot sauces (everything from mexican style salsa's to Franks and Peri-Peri). I'm trying to get my fix over here...On the shelves of most supermarkets here are a selection of various "Molho de Pimenta" - some of which looks a bit like mayo. I've tried one or two of the spicier-looking bottles, but they all just seem to taste like vinegar! Then they've got these little round peppers in jars of vinegar/oil. Has anyone tried these?
Yes, I know that you can get Tabasco here. Besides this, has anyone found a decent brand (local or not) here? The ideal situation would be finding a stockist of Cholula or Nandos sauces - has anyone seen them anywhere? |

Depends on where you are. If you're in Rio or São Paulo, you'll be able to get mexican an thai hot sauce.

A Capetonian friend comes to visit once a year, and is always instructed to pack some bottles of Nando's Peri-Peri. I've never, ever seen it for sale in Brasil! How much is a bottle worth to you?? ![]() Edited by Gringo.Floripa - 04 May 2012 at 20:09 |

Yes, recipe please.
I just came back from a family gathering where 4 of us are hot sauce addicts. We had several types of hot sauce at every meal (my idea of good eatin) and while most of it was homemade there was one storebought sauce from Minas Gerais called "Faisco". If you can get "cozinha mineira" stuff, see if they have this sauce. it was hands down the best sauce i've seen for sale here in BR. You can get Sriracha sauce here in Ctba at Chinese and Japanese markets : Sasaki near the mercado municipal on r dr faivre, i think on the bus station side of 7 setembro, or better yet, the chinese place in alto da XV, corner of atilio borio and sousa naves-- it's a big chinese restaurant, but go around the corner (atilio borio side) and underneath the restaurant is a chinese market, no sign. |

Piri piri is chilli, lemon juice, parsley, garlic, paprika and salt. Mix as you like. Hotness depends on the peppers you use.
Hot sauces that are difficult to make are Indonesian sambals, as they require things like Laos and shrimp paste. I actually bought a litre bottle of Thai sweet chilly sauce last week, which is now half empty, after making pad Thai and Thai yellow curry, after finding this neat Asian shop. They actually had Kimchi, which I ate on the subway....... |

Never fear, I have a peri peri recipe. Infact, i've got a batch maturing in the fridge right now. I used those tiny red chili's - so its pretty fiery. Might need to water it down! I'm from Durban, just down the road from Mozambique (the home of peri peri) - so I grew up with the stuff. G.F, any spare Nandos' would be great! 3casas, I will have a look. There's a guy with a stall at the mercado, he's gone some unusual stuff. he's got some unusual stuff, so will try those at some stage too!

I will dig out my recipes ( I have about 50 of them and I will post them )
I also make my own Sriracha, also mango chili sauce with habanero peppers. My gringo friends that i gave some samples to went nuts over the mango chili sauce. |
