I have dealt with this since the very beginning. I have entered with my paperwork for a Brazilian passport. Hopefully after that there will be no more such B.S. very soon.

Fortaleza-Newf - I think the key is to avoid anybody who is a already in a precarious (leveraged) position with the police. They may do anything to help the police chief to avoid a penalty, whether right or wrong. Wrong as in my case.

Anyone who comes to Brazil, who is a foreigner, can meet the "reigns to power" very quickly since we are so different. Yeah, powerful dealers and human trafickers are "curious" too. I did this in two cities. How the gringo deals with it and reprecussions is up to the gringo.

Unfortunately, I know all the big bad guys from here to the Atlantic. They are not people you want to play with. Civil.. of course, especially at the higher levels. But gringos should be careful or they may be front page headlines.

Brazil -- Xenaphobic - maybe. Opportunistic, definitely!!! Serious stuff.. I have lived here for a while. I know how to manage it. Just wait till my passport arrives!

I have had no personal situations about being a gringo over the 10 years of going around multiple cities in Brazil and now been living about a year as a permanent.
The only thing has been the sexual harrasment from the ladies while visiting some customers facilities (pinching my white arm, when walking by).

Locals do get more hits, like today 10:00am about 100m from my driveway at the end of the street, one guy got 30 rounds (he died). Donno yet what the heck was the reason. There was two cars chasing one, through "my" street, which is normally very quiet. I was at the second floor fixing one light, when we heard these cars rewing up the street, after 20sec, at least three guns were firing like grazy. Then the two chaser cars speed away. People were screaming all a over the place. Police arrived about 15 min laterConfused (they were maybe told to be away long enough?) and then cleared the scene. This guy was executed in his car, bullet holes everywhere, the closest houses got some hits too. The execution did have nothing to do directly with our bairro, but the chase just happened to end there.
Maybe somebody did not pay the drugs or something...
This was by far the worst incident (amount of bullets at one shooting) in our "hood", there was one bomb plot February in nearby school, but that was only material damage. One corner store was tried to rob in Jan but the robber fired the gun accidentally in his own hand somehowLOL

This criminal activity increase is maybe coming because the rest of the city (North, East and South) is now getting big extra police enforcement (Ronda De Bairro) and our side (West) has been the nicest area so far, so we have little to no police going around here. Now the criminals are moving into our area, because of too many police in the other areas?

Do you base your statements on them?

1. Maybe your situation has been different. From the very beginning, someone called the PF have have me deported. When they showed up at my door, they discovered that I had been married for a while. Just the fact that someone called is what pisses me off. Some old guy here told me a long time ago that many people don't want to see you happy. They will do anything to see you unhappy. At least in my personal life, I think these people have given up.

2. With the entrapment situation, I don't doubt it that someone either wanted to embarrass me publically or make a name for themselves. Water under the bridge because I stay far away from either end of the spectrum now. I like the middle where there are no problems.

3. Then of course we have my wife's businesses. Sellers trying to do golpes, employees lying. Local government and functionaries trying to make everything difficult and expensive. I think they have also given up. This is a "short" incident, but sooo many things happened over the course of a couple of years that I had to deal with...

So yeah, I think that Brazil has been a challenge. These are 3 seperate incidents where most people would have said "WTF" and gone to another country. I see so many people on these sites that ask about getting jobs, thinking Brazil is this happy-go-lucky place. Maybe for a tourist. But when you really "get into local things", you will see your share of despicable behavior.

For us, the only way that we will ever be treated as real Brazilians is if we speak with NO ACCENT and we laugh at SBT TV jokes. You may be treated well, the same, or worse a long the way. The point is we are still different in their eyes, and usually treated as such.

Yes, anyone can be targeted as a victim in Brasil - gringos and natives alike. After living here many years, I've found that the biggest threat to my person has come from traffic.
People have driven cars on the side walk almost running me over; cars have come out of nowhere to almost kill me in cross walks; people have perilously cut me off in traffic, and trucks with no brains have given little room for narrow escapes; bicycles and motos contramao have brushed me recklessly.  Yikes!

Although assalts, shootings and kidnappings make all the big news and certainly warrent caution, it is the traffic situations which I find most threatening on a day to day basis. They are ever looming and show no bias to one's nationality.

About the traffic. That's what happened to me. So I got a motorcycle license and 2 wheel transport. If I'm going to get hit, I might as well have it happen the lazy way where I'm not actually walking. I almost got whacked yesterday by someone trying to overtake another car on a narrow road. Good thing I was towards the right hand side of the lane.

I seriously cannot understand Brazilians sometimes. They wait in line at banks for hours but if they have a car going slower in front of them (excercising caution), they want to pass them at all costs. Confused

Chaotic.. I guess that's Brazil. Where I live there's not too much violent crime, but everything else will kill ya.

I would have to agree. When I'm in a car in SP I feel like I'm taking a gamble with my life. Seriously, many people are total idiots on the roads 90% act like inconsiderate twats.
