Meredith - high five on looking for a doctor who supports natural birth!

Both of my macacinhos were born in the US so I dont have anything to say about giving birth here, im just wondering if its true that children of estrangeiros cant be registered as citizens if born in a public hospital? I only know of 2 foreigners who gave birth using the public system and their kids are citizens, but both are married to Brazilians.

My wife is 4 months pregnant, and we are going through this now.  The first doctor we tried was a complete quack.  She talked for half of the visit about her family and how food affects the sex of the baby.  She said she doesn't do pelvic exams in the first trimester because if someone miscarries, she doesn't want them to blame the pelvic exam.  She didn't even bother to get a detailed medical history or family medical history.

The next doctor was much, much better.  She was also very honest when we brought up natural birth.  Basically, she said its up to the doctor that delivers.  If we wanted her to deliver it would cost R$2500 extra.  I understand why doctors would prefer to do a C-section...  less time, more money, and less risk.  BUT, what about what's best for the patient and their wishes???  Someone on this thread said be prepared to argue if you want a natural birth.  I think the reality is that they can agree at first and then basically say almost anything as a reason why you need a C-section (high bp, low baby heart, etc).  Frustrating.

I've had two kids in Brazil (as a father) and both were C-section having been assured that natural birth would be no problem if there we no complications. A minute past the due date seems to be a complication for the doctors here and so they then demand you have a C -section, and you can't argue as you are not medically competent to say it's okay to wait. It's a racket. Another important problem lies in the fact that your doctor will be using the hospital facilities but will bring in his own regular team to assist him (fair enough) but these guys are freelancers with a busy agenda and need to know a date and time as, otherwise, they won't be available. So, get ready for a C section if you are using the private health system.

Thanks. It was a struggle. I had to switch doctors twice and the second time was in month 8. I LOVED my doctor and if it weren't for him I'm sure I'd have been bullied into having a c-section.

My son's birth was a bit tough; the doctor had to use forceps to get the little bugger out. Any other doctor wouldn't have been as knowledgeable and/or would have wanted the easy way out.

You're right about them agreeing to anything and then changing their mind. That's what my former OBGYN did to me. She originally said she'd deliver normally and for about that price...then when I brought it up again months later she said, "remember I told you that I only do c-sections". What a low down dirty liar. It worked out though because I found my doctor who delivered my baby normally, despite the struggle to get him out.

I'd say to search for doctors who have a reputation for parto normal in your city. That's what I did.

As for the pelvic exam, women don't need one until week 38 I'd say, so on that I agree with the doctor even though our reasons are different.

Hi Meredith,

I was just wondering which area of Brazil you live in? I´m also looking for a doctor who will deliver naturally and was hoping you could give me a recommendation.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Look no further than the public hospital or have a huge pot of money to step outside your plano de saude and pay for private care.

Hi to all,

My wife just deliver last month in a public hospital in Belo Horizonte( service care was totally free and the baby got the Brazilian nationality (we are not Brazilian).

In Public hospital they deliver always naturally except if there is complications, in our case my wife didn't got contraction and they wait until 41 weeks then they introduce her to make conduction (to generate contraction and have dilatation, she was ready to deliver naturally but the baby was big and doesn't want to come down,he was going up hhhh, then they was forced to make her a c-section.

The doctors and nurses was very nice and kind with us.
